Plug ATV into your television.

Get ATV and iPhone/iPad all on the same WiFi network.

Load up any audio or video content that you can play full-screen on your iOS device, and hit the little AirPlay icon that appears:

Pick your ATV and bam! shit appears on the TV. You can also mirror the entire iPhone or iPad screen on the TV this way. Swipe up from the bottom and tap AirPlay, then "Mirroring"

You can do this on Android phones too btw. Except I don't have to plug anything into my smart tv downstairs. Just hit a button on the phone and it's on my TV screen

What he said - I did it at my girlfriend's place on her TV almost by accident - one click and it was on the TV in about 5-10 seconds. So far I've tried her TV (LG), mine (Samsung) and a FireTV.

I thought Chromecast only supported specific apps? My ex had one and it was frustrating - Spotify, for example, would not cast but Pandora would. AppleTV does anything your phone will play.

not chromecast, miracast. miracast works just like airplay (and its an open standard), except you dont need a $100 appletv to do it. $39 firestick or a miracast reciever works fine.

native apps on the streamer are still better in both cases however, but its nice to have the flexibility.

Chromecast has gone completely open now. You can mirrorcast your screen if you want. It was frustrating in the beginning but it's gotten a lot better.

No clue, but both devices just have to be on the same network. I don't touch a single button on my LG TV for it to work

Kinda like Jake's picture - it had a little icon to "cast" and my Samsung TV came up as an option - my Samsung TV asked if I wanted to allow the connection and that was it.

At least it will work past the next OS upgrade.

After you buy a $35 adapter.

...except AirPlay has been around since 2010 (for video) and since 2004 (for audio).

And I'm not sure how I'd get my non-smart TV to do either AirPlay or Miracast without some sort of adapter. I have no interest in Smart TV's, as the TV OS will likely be out-of-date before I get rid of the TV.

Eh I've had the same smart TV since 2011 and it still works with everything I want it to. The apps themselves update separately of the OS.

FTFY.

Truth is, you actually are, you're just going about it another way. The good news is we all have choices and can pick what works best for all of us. Pretty much everyone that I work with is on the Amazon ecosystem, because duh.

The markup for a Smart TV is way more than my PS4 or my chromecast, and both of those can do way more than any crappy samsung OS with a remote. Give me a perfect picture with 3 HDMI ports and that fancy (but horribly branded) feature that lets any HDMI device control it and I'm happy. Smart TVs just don't make sense for me.
