21:9 TVs anyone? Seems like they'd be cool, more useful for games or movies rather than this 4K nonsense that nothing can even drive yet. I'm just waiting for a reasonably priced 42-47" model to come out, but I wonder if the format will catch on. I just bought a 25" one for my computer 'cause it was cheap.
Can anyone tell me why TVs don't auto power on/off with signal (or have the option to do so) like a computer monitor does? At least, the ones I've seen don't. Tell me if yours does so I can buy it from you. Pressing a "power" button is kind of silly when driving one with a computer.

21:9 doesnt do much for me personally, but I can see how if you get it big enough it would be a nice cinematic experience (TWSS).
To me Im just like, why chop off the top and bottom, just get a regular 16:9 TV just as wide.
(and for computers, i like 16:10!)
4k Im totally bought into. I bought a 4K tv about a year ago that Ive been using as a monitor and the detail is nothing short of amazing. Not goign to do a ton for you if you get a 46" and sit 20 feet away but a nice big screen sitting at THX distances with good native source material and its every bit as noticable improvement as going from SD to HD

I think the HDMI spec has something like that in it that isnt used much.
For example, the chromecast will turn your tv on and set the input when you stream something to it.
TV cant really turn itself off automatically since it doesnt know if you left the room or youre just binge watching gilmore girls again.
would be cool if kinect did that though by seeing if youre there or not
I kind of don't want to see a 4k TV because in my mind 1080p is still "the best" and I have no plans to buy another TV anytime soon.
21:9 seems a little goofy to me, but I also remember making the transition from 4:3 to 16:9 and thinking it was weird, and now it's almost hard to watch shows made before 2005 because of the aspect ratio.

Yeah and Directv doesn't even display in 1080p unless you buy an upgraded HD movie from it. That is what has held me back from making the jump to 4k...there is no source I have access to that even provides that quality

Exactly. Nothing is in 4k. The curved 4k tvs I've seen in person are the tits, but you would have to buy the loop that best buy plays and watch that on repeat. I couldn't justify a 4k TV when I bought my most recent TV. I would rather catch up with technology than gamble on something like that.

Point is, there isn't enough to warrant getting a TV to watch the handful of selection on each of those sites that is in 4K. For the money, just buy a higher quality 1080P TV and you'll be much happier.

Jesus did season 5 get old real quick and then just kept going and going.....and going. That's one of those things that isn't invented to sell and make money. It's one of those things that's made for the sake of progress. The first breakthroughs are always pointless and no one sees a use in the new technology, then someone finds a use for this new technology and then it's everywhere.

Hah, I did the same thing a few months ago. Got a 50" LED for $Cheap because it's a "dumb" TV. I have no interest in Smart TVs as my AppleTV will let me stream nearly anything I want, with an easier interface (iOS + AirPlay is the best). And I don't watch enough TV (and I own zero gaming consoles) to give a shit about 4K or 3D or whatever the kids like these days.

FWIW I'm pretty content with the 21:9, 2560x1080 format, having used it for a couple days on my home computer (which Win7 and my outdated video card had no trouble identifying). A 29" would be ideal I think, similar to having two monitors. And when I mirror it on the 1080p projector for iRacing, scaling down to 1920 x 810 to keep the projector at a native width but 21:9 format, I've gotten rid of some pixels on the top and bottom that were busy drawing car interior and I don't miss 'em. I could/should have done that before.
I dare say my 16:9 TV is now looking pretty square....
