Most companies do a really shitty job recruiting/rewarding/promoting internally and then complain about turnover.  Sorry IT industry, you made your bed with that one.

100% agree. I have supported the decision of everyone who has left my team with the comment, "what's best for you is what's best for Amazon." A few of them commented they were surprised how well I took it, but I honestly believe that personal growth and satisfaction is what's most important. Else, we're just grinding out in misery for a paycheck. F that noise.

I have had the opposite experience with counter offers. My previous company contacted me about one year after moving to my my current company for a roughly 20% salary increase. I brought it to my management, they counter offered for the same, I accepted and am still working there. I am also making roughly 30% more in the 4 years since and have been promoted internally, so I don’t feel like it really hurt my advancement with my new company or has been held against me. YMMV.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

I think the difference is you didn't have to do anything for the offer. You got a freebie and told your company "this is what I'm worth" and they agreed. When an employee decides to interview with another company/team, they've already gotten to a point where they believe they have to call their employer's bluff. If you're doing that, the relationship isn't healthy and things probably aren't going to last.

So, I think it all depends on your motives. Just because you interview somewhere else to see what you are worth if you think you are getting underpaid doesn't mean you have intentions of leaving you just want to prove you are worth what you say you are. This leaves a bad taste in an employer's mouth because they want to pay you as little as possible to keep you there. They'll go about finding another hire soon enough that they can pay less that will replace you even if you get your temporary raise most of the time even if you don't want to leave. Regardless you should just get out or have a plan to if you don't think you are getting pay and recognition you deserve. This is only if you are very far off of what you make now and need the money, imo. If you are close you should stay if you like the employer/people/job.

Edit: this is just what I've seen/read online.

Anyhoo, I may be looking at another place depending on how my manager deals with my asks at my end of year review next week. Hopefully leverage you all...

Was just announced today that the head of my department is leaving the company. I was already thinking that accepting the offer I did was a good move, now I feel even better about accepting. Wouldn't be surprised if the whole department was split this year and everyone reassigned to other teams or had positions eliminated as part of this "integration" we've been dealing with.

In some industries that may be the case but in IT finding good people is really fucking hard so any company that is not led by dickheads is not gonna try to replace someone simply for the act of interviewing with other companies.

No, but I'm opening a backfill ahead of attrition.

Even though I’m not out of JMU (Class of 2020), I’ll throw my current work experience in here.

Most recent job: Marketing at Bimmeworld which has mainly been comprised of making promotional photos for emails/homepages, and I think is going to progress to writing emails and sales once I get this under my belt(It’s only been a week as of writing this that I’ve been working here)

Other current jobs:

HDPT: Drive the “drunk bus” at night to make some extra spending money. Started this past August and I enjoy it honestly, no crazy drunk stories but also nobody whose thrown up on my bus so I’ll call it a win.

Costco: Work in the tire center back in Leesburg when on winter/summer/etc breaks. Have been here for 2 years now. Half sales, other half actually installing tires. It is cold as hell in the winter, and inescapably hot in the summer, so not sure how much longer I want to do this.

I know Costco is one of the Top 10 companies in the WORLD to work for, but I don’t know what type of future I’d want there, and if I want to bear the tires for 2 more years until I graduate. I could always go inside but that would bore me to death, I can’t just stand at a cash register foe eight hours a day.

Bimmerworld is matching my pay of Costco (minus 401k) which makes me consider leaving them and working fully remote at Bimmerworld over the summer, as this is truly the field I want to work in out of school. What do y’all think of this, I could probably make more money at Costco out of college, but just not sure if I’d be happy there.

Also I work for NASA grid if that counts Wink

Work the hustle, costco by day, dark web knight by night

Costco has lots of opportunities so I wouldn't drop them just yet of you can manage both. Spend some time on the retail side then move to corporate after school. Doesn't Paulie G. still keep a Costco gig on top of building amazing cars?

What the hell has happened to the JMU party/drunk bus scene. You've been driving drunk bus since August and no puke..... It was almost every night at the height and maybe every other weekend at the slowest point I'd get puke. I went through 3 buses one night. Got puke swapped bus, halfway through second run after switch, puke again.

True.

I used to always request route 38 after I had done it for awhile cause it was the slowest route. I could easily keep my passenger count down to 20 a night. I'd just be hammer down jamming to the radio by myself the whole night. It got so slow right before I stopped driving. I can't imagine how it is now. And really can't imagine driving for anyone but Le'Roy. Don't think I could have taken Spencer seriously considering we started driving around the same time.

Costco treats their employees well from what I've heard. Paul Galleron works for them, still, part-time as he does his "Galleron's Garage" thing with old VW/Audis. He's not a cashier or anything, he moved up a bit after starting there in college.

We run to both of those places, but UBER was definitely the busses downfall

I drive for Blake, no idea who Spencer is. But the routes get maybe 5 people a run, and bluetooth is mine for the taking so it’s a party bus in my mind [emoji16]

Costco is solid. If you can get in there, pay your dues, it'll treat you right.

So I interviewed a couple times for the job Ryan had posted for me, but inevitably, I lost the job out to another candidate. It felt pretty good to get back in the ring, but its been nice to stay put a little too. However, things are changing at my current employer and its looking like a good bit of work is being sent to E'town KY. I'm in no position to move from the valley, so I'm once again looking for a job. If anybody knows of anything I'd appreciate whatever info you can give me. Ryan helped a lot on the last one, and I was super close, but hey... ya can't win them all. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear Julie... at least you got some interview practice out of it, which is always a good thing! I'll be sure to forward anything I come across for that area.

I've mentioned it before, but things are officially official now. My last day with CEB/Gartner is this Friday, and I start my new gig at Slalom on Monday morning. Super excited. They invited me to their holiday party in January, so I've met a good chunk of people (the DC office is only 90 people in total) and I think I'll fit right in personality-wise, which is a big perk.

Sorry I should have included that.  I'm looking for Administrative work.  I've done customer service for the last 7 years, but any kind of administrative work would do fine.  I'd like to find something I could advance with.  My company is big, but there's no room for growth here without added headache.  Not really looking for management type positions, but not against them either.
