Our banks have talked. I have a cashier's check ready to go. Seats chosen for the flight.
Seller got the right wheels and tires mounted up yesterday and is having the car detailed today.
Need to get my DMV trip permit and put insurance on this thing.
We land at 10:14 AM and have to make the 45 minute trip back to the seller's bank, which closes at noon. Keep your fingers crossed we can do that so I can get the title same-day.

Going to high jack the thread and revive it since I don't want to create another thread. Truck DD is boring.
Budget 8k. No Miatas or BMWs. Will be entertained by ridiculous finds but definitely won't buy them. Car will split DD duty 60/40 or 70/30 with the truck. I will look at autocrossing this car. Basically, alternating months between tracking the Mazda3 and autocrossing this new DD.
Just to get this out of the way. Why not just turn the Mazda3 into your DD/Auto-x car and save for a real track car? Because I don't want to.
Cars I've looked at in my order of interest. Obviously three pedals is a requirement.
1: 03-04 350Z Track
2: RX8

Edit: I'll be honest here. The fail safe for me here is having no debt out if college and I don't have to track a car and can always sell the truck and Z if needed. I've had a great opportunity out of college with the job I have and live in a cheap cost of living.

wait longer to get a $10k budget. that gets you into the 06+ 350's with the better transmission and the SeriesII RX8s with the improved engine reliability. $8k is right at the edge of used & abused to well-cared-for, but old.
other dumb ideas:
- SN95 new edge Cobra or Bullitt
- S197 mustang GT
- GTO
- mini cooper S
smart ideas:
- NC miata
- 06+ civic Si
none of these really make sense for a single guy commuting around except the miata, if you want to have fun, competitively autocross, and have it be reliable and easy on gas.

Nothing has to make sense for me. Looking at changing things up and trying RWD to see how I like it. So FWD is pretty much out if the question for me right now.
Not trying to be super competitive in auto-x. I'd stay in stock class and mods I'd do to my DD would be cat back exhaust, better tires, good street pads, and dot4 brake fluid.
Not really interested in a GTO or Mustangs. If I'm going V8 it would be a C5 Vette at the minimum.
For a Miata idk why I don't want one. I've driven one through the mountains twice now. It was so much fun. If I did get one. It would need a hardtop. Not dealing with leaking verts as this car will be outside.

Ryan, drive an NC with the Power Hardtop and see what you think. You can find an NC with a removable hardtop but they are rare. Or do what Ryan #1 linked and cry yourself to sleep every night.
Whatever you do, don't buy an E46 or an E36 like I'm sure someone will recommend. I know you, and you won't like it.

did you drive an NC? they're nothing like the NA/NB in a lot of good ways, but they're not a "miata" in weight. think of it as a baby S2000 that doesn't need to be beaten to death to poke around in traffic, but also doesn't get to live in the 8K rpm plus world like all the cool kids.
it also uses pretty much the same mazda 2.0 that you have in your 3, so you can share oil/filters/belts etc.
they do well in stock class with exactly the mods you mentioned. if the time comes, they also swallow very wide wheels/tires.
rherold9 Wrote:It would need a hardtop. there's an app for that. search "prht" or "power retracting hardtop". about a 100lb. weight penalty and a bit more expensive resale.

How bad do NC's leak?
Edit: yes same motor different valve train/head. Never thought about NC's being anywhere near 8k-10k.
And nope haven't driven an NC just two NA's

Like... the roof? They're great. My dad has a 2013 PRHT Grand Touring and loves it. I don't think the seats are very comfortable for someone of my height and torso-to-leg ratio but that varies for each person. Definitely try one out. We got him a second set of wheels with all-season tires and he drives it year round, even in the snow. Obviously you would have the truck for that, but they are capable. The "suspension package" gets you Bilsteins and a LSD.
Dad's power hardtop doesn't leak at all and is very well insulated against rain and snow and whatever.
Between the RX8 and 350Z, I'd probably pick the Mazda - I tend to have an affinity for cars that are potential maintenance disasters... although I also just can't get too into the 350s. The 370 interests me way more but $$$.
