Yeah it's a real shame that FE and emissions regs have killed high-revving powerplants.

And really you bring up a great point. It's one thing to give up a bit of power to have a fun high-revving powerplant from Honda. But if you don't get that n/a powerplant, the turbo engine has to make up for it somehow. If it doesn't have as much or more hp as the competition, it really hurts the argument for the car.

It does have the adaptive suspension, but I kinda feel like that's only a net-positive if the 'sport' mode is more aggressive than what a Si suspension normally would've been. A typical Si's suspension was never really that harsh to begin with, so you don't need a 'soft' mode just to provide respite from something that was mildly firm to begin with.

You'd only have to give up 10hp, didn't the Type R make like 195hp?

The comparison to the Mazda3 really shows how unimpressive the new Si is IMO. If you and your passenger's having a heavy lunch could cancel out the power advantage your "hot hatch(ish)" has over a non-hot model, then something is wrong.

Better point of comparison would be the 2006-2011 Si, which had about 200 hp at 8000 rpm.

Not really. The regular Civic Hatchback that's rated at about 180 hp, is a half-second faster to 60 than the 3 S, at about 6.2. I don't expect the Si to be massively faster than that due to traction limitations but it should be around 6 seconds flat.

The GTI typically has the best interior in the segment, followed by the Mazda 3. However, the 3 doesn't have a sport version anymore so it's out of the convo.

The 3 doesn't need a sports version since the standard is more than capable. Could it use more power? Yes. But for what it is, it's great. Plus you can get the 3 pedal, with a sunroof and leather.

right, just being hyperbolic. of course those engines also make, like, zero torque but its part of the game you sign up for with that kind of driving dynamic.

you can certainly make a fun turbo engine, but it seems like the unoffensive mass production methods demand and engine that gives you the undramatic, early power and tapers off, and that doesn't fit the Si name.

hoping the R will get something that feels like an event instead of a big easy push.

I think it's pretty hard to make a turbo engine that is quite as exhilarating as the best n/a powerplants. Even driving a 488 and 458 back to back, I'd much rather have the 458, even though the 488 was stupidly fast. Mo revs, mo betta.

So Autoguide is reporting that the new Accord won't have a V6 option - only the turbo 4 from the Civic Type R. Now I don't give two fucks about the Accord, but there is a bigger issue here. Just the way it is. Turbo fours are easier, make the same hp, less emissions. They've always been a weird middle child and now they're going to die, just like the Straight Eight did.

On the other side of the coin manufacturers are also walking back the ultra-miniaturization trend now that people are realizing that 1.0Ls and 1.5Ls are only more efficient in an engineer's fantasy land, but are more or less just as dirty as a bigger engine because you have to constantly dump a bunch of boost and fuel into it to get it out of it's own way.

I don't think V6's will disappear entirely like the Straight 8. There is a place where they may be needed.

But wow is it gonna be expensive. Only engine is the V6S and it will start at $71,445.
