I gotta ask, how "instant" is the usability of your arm? I broke mine (radius and ulna, arm was bent, it was ugly) in HS and chose no surgery. Obviously the overall healing time was longer for me but I was always curious how quickly you'd be back to normal function with plates and screws.
I have a 4-6 week recovery time, but I had good mobility while it was broken so I anticipate 4 weeks. I'm using it more and more every day.
