Get on Google Maps and follow the forest road via GPS. If your little icon is off the legal forest road your ass is off-trail. That's pretty damn clear.
If you want more "technical" documentation get familiar with the USDA MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map). This will tell you what are legally the roads you can access as well as other roads that rotate with seasons for hunting or fire fighting.

Example 2: The hill climb everyone tears up at the Union Springs entrance. Is that Union Springs road? No. It's illegal.
