truthfully, i don't really care all that much. i'm pretty close to not using the plate scrambling app. i just figured some difficulty for would-be a-holes would be better than none.

btw, i haven't completely given up on the idea of keeping the black prets. I want to drive on the heavier englishtowns for a little while and see how much that 3.6lbs/wheel matters with how i use the car. Ultimately if i don't want to sell them, if i decide to sell them and don't get the price i want, or if the powder coating option is more than i want to spend i'll turn them into the summer set and strap a set of summer tires on the Pretorias. I have this obsession with having a winter set of tires for driving around in the mild DC-area climate for some reason, the Englishtowns could wear that winter set after the all-seasons wear out.

i like the E-towns but i'll be honest, my OCD hits the redline when i see directionally swept wheel designs pointing one way on one side of the car and the opposite way on the other. it makes my eyes twitch.

glad you like them though and at the end of the day a good silver on red combo is always hot.

a 3 week update:
put about 900 miles on it so far just wanting to drive it more every day and looking for excuses to do so.

Had a few issues addressed at Lindsay VW that i knew of when buying the car:
- passenger pull handle was broken (seems to be common with '19 Rs). fixed under warranty.
- ACC and LKAS aren't working due to a misaligned front camera. got the car back, but waiting to hear back from VW's warranty department. i fully expect for them to handle this one as the only way to fix it is to remove the windshield. to fix this they also need to recalibrate the ACC and LKAS sensors as well as an alignment (normally $700, but warranty). the rear camber was found to be out of spec, so i had them do an alignment. apparently the stock components are adjustable for camber up to -3.5* in the rear and -2.5* in the front, who knew? i'm not actually planning on using either feature much, but i just wanted to button up things i thought should be addressed.

Thinking more about the gloss black pretorias i'm planning on keeping them and not touching the color. i've found bronze and silver and hyper black examples on red GTIs and Rs and have not liked what i've seen so far. the gloss black does match well with the trim and tint. i'll get summer tires later and mount them on there; not in a huge rush to do this as the current tires are actually pretty good in terms of traction and tread life even if the E-Towns are noticeably heavier.

Having the rear doors is nice for daily use, however i do miss the long doors of the 2-door for arm position and peripheral view. The lack of a sunroof is not something i thought i'd miss and i don't. If i get the need for some extra lighting or wind i'll just drive the z3. The DCC is really nice: comfort with the family and responsiveness/feel when i'm alone with a press of a button. I'm still having the android auto issues, but i'm using that less and less anyway. i like covering up that area in front of the shifter since i don't need to run a cord to the port behind the cover. The gearing feels taller in the lower gears when compared to the GTI and i think VW made it so that the top of 2nd is right at 60mph. Finally the grip in the wet and out of corners is silly; it just squats and goes. i've only been able to break the tires once and i could only tell by the flashing traction control light.

no buyer's remorse yet

I guess things are a little slow, so may as well update this thread.

Lindsay VW fixed the front camera issue under warranty. It required a windshield replacement, front camera surround repair, and a realignment of the ACC/LKAS system. The realignment alone would've been $700 had i paid for it myself. Now that the ACC and LKAS work i can see how they compare against the Ridgeline's system. I tried it once, but there wasn't enough traffic to get a good feel for it, but i can say the LKAS isn't nearly as aggressive. I was surprised how the ACC works with a manual transmission. I'm used to the cruise control disengaging when the clutch pedal is depressed, but you can switch gears with ACC. It seems kind of dumb, but i doubt i'll use it often anyway.

I broke the Aukey OBD2 motion sensor removing it from the windshield and I had some issues with the Aukey DR02 in general, but i'll put that stuff in the dash cam thread. I won't be putting that dash cam back on anyway, so it's not a huge deal.

Went back to black. Decided to keep the Pretoria wheels and not powder coat them since I felt (after too much deliberation) they matched the trim and tint pretty well. I looked at a LOT of red mk7 and mk7.5 GTIs and golf Rs and I didn't like what I saw for aftermarket wheels and various wheel finishes/colors. The MK7s looked better with other color wheels and I think it had more to do with the lack of piano black trim when compared to the 7.5s.

I found a set of Michelin ps4s on direct tire's site with a flash sale and a separate Michelin rebate, so 4 new ps4s tires for typical price -$170. I debated going for a more budget tire, but the prices were too close after the sale and rebate.

I just now installed the spare tire kit that I ordered from DAP a while ago since the foam and trim pieces were delayed a while due to COVID. I bought the diesel geeks short shift kit and I also ordered the IE intake and am waiting on that. Once the intake arrives I'll install both of those pieces. I accrued some points where some were due to expire, so i also got the flush kit for oem wheels from DAP (black wheel bolts, 10mm front spacers, 15mm rear spacers). Now I want to paint the rotor hats black.

Little mods make me happy. [Image: b101b6006c3712bc06a4733c61b85d46.jpg][Image: be8dda0e9e16e86581b532f8d633b1a5.jpg][Image: b68f53b224236ea20900ed3622aaf1ad.jpg][Image: daf181a239e100b9cbb1f3209f5ce129.jpg]

not much of an update, but alas:

I ordered the Deiselgeeks SS kit and it sat for a little while as the IE intake was back ordered (order placed in March); I was just *really* lazy and didn't want to remove the intake twice. I recently received the intake, installed that, and also installed the SS kit.

New boost/turbo noises and notchy short shifts are now here. Sounds great and feels nice.

welp, it's been exactly a year since the purchase. So far so good with as little miles as it has. I've only put about 7.5k miles and that's mainly been because I've simply wanted to drive it around. I love getting in and driving it.

I've discovered that AWD donuts in the snow are really fun (all season tires), however the car flips out and lights up the dash even with the traction control off. The snow traction is pretty decent with the Conti DWS 06s tires and the 4motion works well; not as confident as dedicated winter tires, but that's understandable.

I've enjoyed the short shift kit and that feel should've come stock, imo. Overall i've been pretty pleased with the decision to buy the car and plan to own it for a while. I'm hoping it'll retain value as well.

yeah, your city living plus no commute will do that, ha.

we've been lucky to have preK still open; they have strict covid/health protocols in-place. most of my miles now-a-days are that, getting take-out, and medical appointments. things are too relaxed (imo) around NoVA though. People still go to gyms, eat inside restaurants, and don't wear masks at indoor places... Dodgy I think it's going to be a while before numbers start to really go down around here.

I used to be the grocery store mule until Alissa got her vaccine shots. Now she does most of everything outside the house that requires indoor things for any amount of time.

Even our doctors are all online, assuming no physical exam required. Oh I do drive to the massage therapist once a month! All of our room temp groceries have been delivered via Amazon subscribe and save for years and we have milk delivery from a local from, so really it's just meat and veg the wife goes to the grocery store for... that is, when she doesn't decide to get them delivered via Amazon Fresh.

I do wonder how mileage for used cars changes the market, if at all. Like, does 10k miles/year no longer seem lower mileage for a few years after COVID? At what point does your car become a BaT hot item because it's fairly low?

A bunch of people in our neighborhood had to start charging their EVs at home because they could no longer charge them at work. You can tell people didn't plan for it because they have some janky cords sticking out of their house running down their driveways.

most of my medical stuff that had me driving more had been an allergy shot build-up phase (2/3 time a week in-person for a shot in each arm for each visit). i'm now on the maintenance phase of the allergy shot regimen (once every 2 weeks for a while), so the miles will slow to accumulate on the R. the preschool isn't too far and the grandparents we don't see often, so not much there either. It's interesting to see the chart/graph of mileage over time when looking at the COVID shutdown and slow opening a couple months later.

Pending the types of vehicles available in a couple years we'll probably replace the wife's wagon with an EV of some kind. i'm waiting to see what kinds of level 2 charging stations are developed and EV charging standards start emerging/changing.

As for used cars i think the lower mileage will definitely help with resale regardless as long as it was still maintained and doesn't have issues. We'll see if people also learn to check the tire date codes for low mileage cars. Granted they weren't on a used car, but I recall buying a set of winter tires from TireRack and referencing the purchase receipt. the tires must've been in the facility for well over 18 months. granted they likely know how to store tires i was a little disappointed to see that.
