Purchase Advice - 2014 Cherokee
#1
Hey everyone,

Fiance's brother is looking into picking up a 2014 Cherokee, since he views me as a "car guy" he asked me for advice on it and I pretty much had none other than reliability on Jeeps is ironically less than what you'd want/expect and that he's coming from a Scion Tc so gas mileage is going to hurt (his commute is about 50mi each day.)

That being said, is there anything in particular he should be looking for in one and/or something he should be avoiding? Any known issues? Quick searching shows some issues around the transmission?

Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

For a non-enthusiast, the CX5, CRV and the RAV4 are probably safer choices in that segment. CX5 is a better driver, others offer much better reliability and resale.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

Idk what model he looking at but I drove a base model 2014 cherokee rental for 2 weeks and it was god awful. Totally underpowered 4 cylinder. No support at all in the seats. Another vote for a CX-5. Didn't you just get on?

Yeah, which I suspect is exactly why he doesn't want one (same car as his sister is a no-go i guess?)

I have heard a lot of crap about the 9-speed trans in these. A buddy of mine had a Renegade with the same transmission and grew to dislike it pretty quickly.

+1 for the Mazda or Honda. Typical "also cross shop these" could apply to the Sportage and Escape, I think all four of those options have proven to be pretty decent/interesting. No Toyotas because reasons and also, even blind people think their new design language is awful. Tongue

Now, is your friend also a "car person," or your average user who, because the transmission is that poop, complains about it?

Not sure what the difference between a regular Cherokee and a basically fully loaded one but, I actually really like my roommates 2015 Grand Cherokee... It has to have most of the bells and whistles. Drives well, good enough power, transmission feels fine, decent interior for a Detroit car, and overall comfy. No qualms about being a passenger in one or even driving it the few times I have. I would never purchase one because of the shop car reality but they are initially pretty nice. Can't say I'm not impressed by it as a whole though.

Grand Cherokee is a whole different animal if i understand correctly. Those, from what i gather, are pretty decent outside of reliability issues.

Yeah, the Grand is a totally different vehicle.

Ken, my friend who had the Renegade is a car guy to a point, but not an uber nerd like most of us are. He had some issues with build quality (but Renegade is newer and they've had less time to deal with teething pains) and just didn't love the drivetrain on it. Not sure if Jeep has put out some software updates to help or what. Worth researching more I think.

I wasn't aware they had separated the Cherokee line again.

I was thinking Grand Cherokee this whole time. But besides looking awful, I'd never buy a chyrsler again. Our Jeep liberty literally ate it's window regulator every time you opened the back window. We went through 4 of them and that was mainly because we forgot and opened the windows those times.

I'd give him your advice (basically anything except the Cherokee) and if he doesn't take it, he doesn't take it. We all know they suck. Cx-5 is what everyone likes I guess.

I may be the only one but I think the Tuscon looks pretty good in the right trim and they come pretty loaded with bells and whistles now.

Ford flex is still a favorite for my suv wise but they aren't the same segment at all. Flex is way bigger. They also have weird looking seats. (look cheap)

We actually test drove the Tucson as well when we looked at CX-5 - it was pretty good actually. A lot for your money and i like the twin clutch they put in it.

So - he didn't get a 2014 Jeep Cherokee!

He got a 2016 Jeep Cherokee. Le sigh.
