New Guy With Kz200 Troubles
#1
Hey guys/girls. I have a 1978 Kz200 non-running due to a stripped head and camshaft. Here is a link to my build and at the bottom of the page (pictures) is where I'm stuck. I can't seem to find a head or camshaft. I've bought a KLT200 head and cam but had to return them when the carb boot intake did not fit and there was no tach meter. Can anyone help?

-Thank you,

If you are in Harrisonburg, I'd take both to Blue Ridge Machine behind Rocking R hardware and get their opinion on it. It's possible that they could get the cam repaired and use a different bearing and some cleaning up to make it all work again. They do quality work, and have built two engine blocks for me (both of which required significant machining).

+1 used Blue Ridge Machine, just make sure their honest about their prices up front, otherwise you can get licked pretty good for a good port job.

I would love to go to these guys but I can't be paying so much for such a bike. I was told the head and the cam are done for. New ones should be ordered. Otherwise by remaking/rebuilding them would just make them weak creating cracks and weak points. I don't want to risk anything. But thank you for the recommendation!

You may be better off saving your money, selling what you have and trying to pick up another bike.. These old bikes go for pretty cheap as you know.. and you clearly have the know how to work on them...

(On a completely different side note see if you can pickup a kz550 and swap in the engine... anyone chime in and know if the 550 will fit in the 200 frame?)

Anything will fit with enough time and metal Smile

also look at the 440 to see if that would fit.

Yeah I'd like to just sell this one but I might get $400 out of her max. I've put too much time, effort, and $$$ (almost $1000) into her to just give up. I'm not that type of person. I know whats wrong with her, and know how to fix it..but that may take me a while. I'm looking for a spare engine and most kz engines have the same engine mounts. Its the paper work I have to worry about. I'm just too deep right now. Can anyone help or know someone that can help?
-Thanks

Go to a couple local shops and ask them to work their contacts to help you find a motor, I'm doing the samething to find a GS500 motor.

just happened across this on CL - can't really figure out if he has an engine or not in the bike

I know its probably more $ than just finding an engine, but you might want some of his extra parts or your could just sell'em

I appreciate it. Yeah I found that on CL quite a long time ago and the guy is in no way going to part that thing out. I'm just gonna have to keep on looking, if its a new engine or a new head..which ever comes first. Hopefully it wont take too long.
