The HKS Wastegate that is currently on the car is in desperate need of a valve re-seat (exhaust is leaking past the valve at idle) so I am giving it a go. I have the valve out, I am going to get some grinding compound and hit it with a drill, I will see how it goes.

Just a warning: this is not the correct way to do any of this.

To resurface the wastegate valve, I bought some lapping compound and a stone grinder bit for my dremmel. I hit the high spots on the valve seat first with the grinder bit, applied the lapping compound to the valve and reinserted it into the housing. I put the nut back on the valve and spun it in the housing with my drill to create a clean mating surface.

Result after cleaning up:

I had to flip a washer around in the wastegate upon re-assembly to push the valve slightly further into the housing due to the removed metal on the valve seat and housing, but it seems to have worked really well; I can't feel any exhaust leaking past the valve at idle anymore :dunno: :dunno: . We will see how well this holds up.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how my father-in-law described doing valves when that procedure was routine maintenance on cars  (maybe minus the dremel though)

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

I wouldn't have used the dremel, but the seat was so far out of round there was no way to just lap it. I could rock the valve up and down a couple mm North and South where it was fully seated East and West. The valve seat probably warped when it was welded on.

Fighting what I think is a dead fuel injector. Who should I send them to to get them rebuilt?

Injectorpulse.com, had at least 3 sets of injectors sent to them. Fantastic job and great turnaround.

Injectors back from InjectorPulse and the car is running on all 4 again  Not a perfect experience - the gaskets that the injectors were shipped back with were not correct. They were close (I think they were for standard injectors or maybe an EVO) but the top rings were too small to give a good seal in the rail and the bottom rings were too large to fit into the head. Didn't bother to even ask to make it right, just ordered a gasket set and all was good :dunno:

Now my right rear brake is sticking after sitting for 2 months. Onto the next project.

Few updates on the car

In the process of installing the CAI / 2g MAF setup I have had sitting around forever.

The filter and filter adapter will not fit, so I ordered a lower profile filter / adapter plate.

I also (attempted) a boost leak test. I am getting a lot of air out of the exhaust and past the rings. Not the PCV valve. Guess I need to do a leak down test. I pulled the plugs / did a compression test as well:

#1 appears to be running really lean, #4 is fouled and a gray / silver in color. I think the coil may be headed south (1 and 4 share a coil). May also explain the idle misfire. Plugs/ wires are new, compression appears (relatively) OK, I can’t find any vacuum leaks, injectors were cleaned last year. Any other ideas what else would cause a plug to look like this?

a failing coil will show rich, poor burn.

those plugs dont look all that bad, but its hard to say whats really going on - and once you have stepped out of the stone age and dont have carburetors anymore a wideband O2 tells you so much more.

Turbo motors are hard on ignition components though, on the Audi I was replacing plugs every 10k and I swapped the coils twice during the time i owned it (3 years).

I’m thinking it’s something with the coil or power transistor. 1/4 and 2/3 share a coil. It could also be a power transistor that is slow to switch or a bad cap in the ECU. Or none of these things. Weird as hell.

2G MAF is installed using a different CAI pipe and my standard use of Home Depot Racing modifications. I also changed the coil pack and installed 1 heat range hotter plugs (Autolite 63 vs NGK BPR7ES). I took it out and did a quick tune on the MAF to get the AFR dialed in. The car is running really, really strong and is not breaking up at high RPM anymore, so I consider this a great success.

Next up is the power steering pump and changing the 9 year old accessory belts.

I mean, there is a 95% chance the bottom end of the motor is still really worn out, and I should do a leak down test. 150 compression on #3 is very real. The #3 cylinder is also less hot when you hit the exhaust manifold with an IR temp probe at idle as a result. I’m just going to boost the crap out of it and see how long it holds up. It’s been fine for 9 years and 30k miles. I don’t really care so long as it doesn’t impact drivability.
