Theres an upright 33 gal Craftsman that was on sale.. Don't remember the exact specs, but it should be nice (after all these years of breaker bars). Gotta go get a big-ass 1/2" drive gun and a hose reel, then should be good to go. I'm pretty excited.

Anyways, back on topic - have you taken any welding classes? Is that a MIG or a TIG welder? What other gear do you need with that? I'm *very* interested in learning how to weld - cost of entry and lack of a detached garage is what's holding me back at the moment...

It is a MIG and Flux Core welder. Basically you can use Flux core wire and no gas or you can use solid wire and gas and make it a MIG. Couldn't afford the TIG unit. This one was only 350 it is the 125 110v unit. The next step up is the new 140@500 or the 180@650 (220v) I would have like the 180 but just couldn't justify the cost. I can get 90% of the stuff I want to do, done w/ the 125. I haven't taken any 'classes' but I've been arc welding for quite some time and I've had a little practice w/ flux core welding w/ pete's welder. I'm going to get the Gas real soon so I can do a little MIGing.

115 volts is fine for fabbing/fixing stuff outside of heavily stressed stuff like motor mounts. you don't get enough penetration to be safe. Having said that, i'm sure people out there do it.

I took a MIG and TIG welding course at NOVA CC, it was very good. It was fun to learn, but I would much rather pay someone who really knows what they are doing for anything like a cage or seat mounts, so I havent bought a welder. (and either of those should be TIGed anyway...)

Did you have Bob? I took it too, great class. He let me take in my SS exhaust so I could TIG weld it.

Currently I'm looking for someplace a little cheaper.

Try a machine shop. Do they have those in NOVA/MD? :-). Also, make sure you get a good quality steel. The stuff at Lowes is actually pretty cheap steel and not a good mixture. For seats, brake brakets (thus my application), etc, it's a good idea to get some good stuff.

Also, McMaster Carr, Grumond, etc.

Mock it up with cheap stuff, finish it with the good stuff!

McMaster Carr, now that place is expensive!

There are a couple places in Manasshole that I know of that have good steel for cheap. My welding instructor tolds us about them. I havent actually been to one though.
