I went from one end of the spectrum to the other this past week. I sold my 85' Honda Shadow cruiser and bought myself a 2005 Yamaha R6. Bike clocks in at 12k miles, Yoshi exhaust, GPR 1.0 Stabilizer, Adjustable Levers, and "Raven Edition" trim. Picked it up from CL, the same day I sold my cruiser actually. Was looking at a 50,000 mile CBR 600 first, but it turned out to be a pile, so I sat in MD on craigslist looking for something near me so the night didn't seem like a complete waste. Found this one, albeit a little out of my price range but decided to take a look anyway. I immediately fell in love when I saw how clean the bike was, and realized that I would rather pay more for a cleaner example of a bike, especially if I was already spending this much money (for a college student) on a bike.
The PO was the epitome of young and dumb, selling this R6 for the R1 he bought after not even putting 1,000 miles on this bike. Wasn't the best person to buy a bike from, but the bike was clean and the deal was good so I sent it that very night(Why am I such an impulsive buyer?). Ended up leaving my car in the mall parking lot, and riding the new bike home just to get a ride back to the mall, later on, to pick up my car (which luckily was not on cinder blocks when I got there).
This bike is the most fun I think I've had on the street, while simultaneously being the most terrifying experience I've had. It scares me into submission and keeps me in check from being too much of a squid, but god does it open up above 9K RPMs, hence the title of the thread and my new license plate ;p
Some things it needs IMO: Brake fluid flush, tighten levers (they seem loose in an up and down motion, is this normal?), new oil, clean/lube chain, air filter check/clean.
Now that I have a proper bike, my plan will be to take some track lessons and get into that scene, alongside DE in my car. This means I need full race leathers, proper boots, and stainless brake lines probably. None of which I have money for after buying this and furnishing my apartment :'(
In the meantime, my next moto investments will be riding jeans and a properly fitting jacket that offers more back protection than my current, so any suggestions are welcome on both of those fronts. Now, onto the gallery (most of these were from the sale ad, I haven't got around to taking any myself yet):

Nice pick up!
Reminds me of the dumb time I bought a 600rr from a guy and rode it home... I couldn't figure out why it was so difficult to turn until I checked the front tire pressure.... 12psi....
So, uh.... Check that. Also, have fun, be safe! Easy to get in over your head with a super sport. A lot of fun though.

Haha forgot to mention, I checked my pressures the next day....front tires were at 11psi, back was at 22....

Good, I hope others read this.
Btw, I used something similar (cheaper) to these under regular jeans (impact protection). Moto jeans are great against road rash, I assume, but won't protect against a hard hit.

Also a side note. You're probably not going to want to DE your car once you go down the track with a bike... It's quite the GFCP
Without seeing it in person and how much it's actually moving, I'd say some play in the levers are normal if I recall but there are many on here who know better than I do. I haven't even seen my bike in like 2 months.

Nice pick up! Check CL for gear. People are getting rid of things all the time for a great price. Another thing I would highly recommend is getting the suspension set up for your weight i.e, sag. IDK how much you weigh, but that will make a gigantic difference on the ride and control.
Also, while the tread may look good have you checked the date of manuf on the tires? Ample tread does not always mean tires are in good shape. Old tires get hard and lose traction. All things to think about on your path to going fast!

None of which I have money for after buying this and furnishing my apartment :'( None of those thing are required for purchase for the track right away. Almost all of the major track day orgs (TeamPro Motion, G2Evovle, N2, etc) will rent you an boots, gloves, suits for the weekend for a fair price. If you're going to spend coin on a piece of gear immediately I would say boots. Probably also don't need to spend money on stainless lines. Your R6 calipers are probably 100x better than the SV650 units. If you're worried about stopping power, do a good bleed/flush, upgrade the fluid to a Motul equivalent, clean up your rotors, and throw on some more aggressive pads (EBC Sintered).
I am considering NC bike on the 25th with Evovle GT if you're itching to get on track! Come down Friday and we can load up 2 bikes on a trailer.

What's your chest size? You a little dude? I still have my gear, probably time to let it go.

Yep, made sure the tire age was good as well as tread which I knew all too well. The previous shadow tired had great tread, but were 14 years old haha. Good point on used gear, that’s where a lot of my friends have found good finds for cheap. I’m curious how much renting gear costs for a track day, will have to look into that. I didn’t even think about adjusting the suspension, it feels good to me but maybe I will start messing with the coil over and see how it feels.
I would come to that track day but will be at VIR for a nasa event. Also don’t have the money for any track days this season unfortunately.

You can probably have the whole set for ~$85 for the day? Suits range from $50-65 a day and boots are maybe $15-20? Good opportunity to see if it's something you want to invest it.
