Ryan Herold running for Vice President
#1
Hello all,

My name is Ryan Herold. I'm going to be running for Vice President. I drive the black Mazda3 sedan and have been in the club since Freshman year but a bit more active this year since I have a car up here. A little bit about me for people who don't know I'm Florida, my mom's an Alumni. I will be a junior CIS major next year. I work at the CampusNet department for JMU.

Well I believe we need some more social events. We need to get the Freshman attendance up and feel welcome to the club as they don't have a car here. When I was a Freshman I felt like I couldn't do anything because of the lack of transportation so I didn't do as many things. We should maybe try have more on-campus meals to get together like there were last year to offer Freshman the chance to join in and get to know others. We should keep offering rides to Freshman as well. All in all we need to get people to get into the club and stay before they get too involved in other things.

I think we should keep doing the awesome job with car show. Maybe have it twice a year instead of just the one in the Spring. Fall and Spring car show I think would be both great successes. I also would like to go karting more than just once. I know it is costly and we always lose money on it but it has been awesome way to get everyone together. I still think we need to keep with it for the NASA events at VIR and Summit. I also think we should be more inviting and try to attend more Auto-x opportunities than just at Verona as a club. Keep the Kline's meet twice a year as well once in the Spring/Fall.

I think we need to also look into other local events such as drifting at Shenandoah Speedway and Summit, cruises, etc... that some people may enjoy. As always who doesn't want to go on more club cruises? Maybe we can try and figure out other routes besides just 33W.

Also, we need to get some fundraising ideas out there. Car washes are simple and effective as well as bake sales are a couple ideas that we definitely need. Keep the apparel orders going I know a lot of people like that for the Fall.

Feel free to bring up any questions!

Two car shows would be a lot of work, but it was also be a tremendous addition to MM's event list and would definitely help get more attention for MM at the beginning of the year. Hopefully getting us more member attendance.

Yes but there is all summer when there is nothing going on to plan the Fall car show Big Grin

I think it is a great idea, imo. It really would help with getting our name out there more and more

Good idea- i'm sure you saw it this year/ any of the officers will tell you- planning the car show is a huge undertaking.

And good call- you have a lot of free time during the summer to plan out a lot- it will help you!

I love where your head is at Ryan.

Just to give you some history....

We did a fall/spring show for a few years, it kinda died off during an administration change and the loss of our off campus host w/ dyno. Two on campus shows would take some effort, but I think If you did the fall show early enough, like within the 3-4 weeks of being in school it could work.

Not sure how Karting is losing the club money? Never made money, but always broke even.

Definitely work toward attending other AutoX events, in the past we tried to get folks out to NASA-X down near me in Richmond, but no one ever showed. With the large alumni presence in NOVA, a few field trips up there for a weekend autoX at fedex would be great.

I love the idea to get better Freshman involvement. what are your ideas to advertise the club to the noobs entering our great university?

I believe we need a stronger presence at Student Org Night, we need to standout somehow. Still brainstorming on how. We should advertise on the Commons. Yeah most people just walk by and throw away shit but we need something to standout again. I wish the university wasn't so damn stubborn and would let us put a car up there. Could we get on the JMU informational emails that people usually don't pay attention to? At least we can try to do some of these things and maybe they will work. Who knows if we don't try.

Re: autocrosses and things up in NoVA - some of us have talked about this before, just in passing.

If you can figure out a weekend where there's an autocross nearby (they're mostly in MD, which we consider "local" for the lols), I bet you would be able to coordinate a weekend up here with the alums. Plenty of us live nearby, a lot of us have space for guests, and Katie's Cars & Coffee is every Saturday, early morning. So, you could come up Friday night, go to Katie's (if you've seen photos, you get a LOT of cool shit turning out), maybe we do a Saturday BBQ, and then autocross Sunday.

Just an idea but I think it'd be worth pursuing.

 MM Reston house has a guest bedroom, lots of couches, will most likely be attending said autox, and is just a couple miles down the road from Katie's.

You just have to deal with the BMW snobs that live there.

Justin, karting loses money due to the student discount. Maybe gforce has raised their prices but even 100% full, you lose $200

But the problem lately has been unfilled events causing more loss.

Earlier planning and setting a concrete date months in advance would help that though.

When I did it, I set the date the first week of school (and actually had the date picked way before that). I spent the next two months cheerleading for how awesome karting was and why everyone should go.
