DMV Registration shenanigans
#1
Is there any way in Virginia to maintain my registration in Rockingham county, even if I'm moving to NoVA? Register to a PO Box? Browsing the DMV's website didn't really answer anything :dunno:

use your apt address, not like they are gonna come looking for you.

Change registration to NoVA but you can "garage" it in Harrisonburg. That gets me out of emissions.

Why do you want to keep it registered down there?

Where/how exactly is the "garaged" thing done? I guess I can go into the DMV, renew it, and just say oh its garaged in Hburg and they don't care? Can I just provide my current/future old address?

Mostly b/c there is no benefit at all to registering in Nova, only drawbacks, so if I can take advantage of living here I figured I'd take it. I didn't know of this seperate "garaging" loophole.

all of my cars are "garaged" in harrisonburg. They dont even ask an address for where. Just keep your nova address and tell em its garaged in harrisonburg.. simple as that. no emissions ever. Insurance wont know or care. If anything say you forgot to change it once you moved away from school. Never been an issue with me or any of my 15 freinds who have been doing the same thing for like 8 years now

Just do the same thing. Tell them you're in school and the primary address is school. Of course if they happen to investigate after an accident and find out it's garaged up here, they can deny coverage.

^^ dumb, register the car here and garage it in rockingham county. All this means is that your primary address is up here (correct) and you keep the car mostly in that county, and you abide by those county's rules (just inspection). Insurance cannot deny your claim if you get an accident up here, as all your information is correct. (how are they to know you dont keep it down there, if you get in an accident in illinois your still covered, your just on a trip, doesnt mean you live there)

Yeah you're fine insurance wise, I did this with the STi for a while. Your insurance will cover you anywhere you are.

I registered my miata to my parents address. I do get property tax bills and the registration at that address so it should be a mailbox you can actually get to.

you can still tell your insurance company where the car actually is.

you registered your vehicle at their address... different from a garage address. they send nothing to the garaged address. harrisonburg sends me my tax and registration stuff to arlington.

I am seriously interested, can they deny me coverage if im anywhere but where I say I live? My registration is at my primary address and my insurance is at my primary address, I see no reason they can legally deny me coverage if I get in an accident anywhere because of any "location". For as far as I knew, I could get in an accident in Alaska and they would cover me correct?

Yeah, you're safe.

The problem arises when they get nosy and start looking into ways out of big claims or why you've gotten more tickets/accidents at your primary address instead of where it's garaged. Saying you keep the car somewhere you don't to save money is basically misrepresenting what they're covering. It's not hard to prove where you spend most of your time (job, etc.) and if they can do that they can deny based on fraud.

That ain't gonna be a problem for 99.9999% of the people because it isn't cost effective to do that sort of thing. It's the people with big claims (total loss, medical bills, etc.) or a shit ton of claims that get looked at a lot harder. If they find a crack, they'll try and exploit it so I just warn people to be wary of that.

Dearest Goodspeed----
I know I am late to the party...but....I actually work for the DMV LoL and this is part of my job at MAM. Thought you knew, but apparently not since you didn't ask haha. You can register the car to your address in NOVA and as they posted before me, just say that you are garaging it in Harrisonburg. Your insurance will be much cheaper. I called about it to insurance before, and even though I am technically a resident of PA, since I live here 10+ months out of the year I can register a car to VA and get VA priced insurance (much cheaper than PA!!!) So you can just register it to your parents place, then just garage it in Hburg. Hope this helps a little bit.

Just an FYI, It is considered Insurance Fraud if you list the address the car is garaged/used at as different than it actually is. Coverage can and most likely will be denied IF it is found out and there could be other legal penalties as well. Again, just an FYI.....

Yeah, this is what I'm gathering, so I'll probably pass on doing this. I could save a buck, but lose a lot more if something happens
