So I know I've probably bugged a lot of you about what car to buy and which is the best. And I've probably also said I was going to buy like 13 different cars. Well, I'm going tomorrow to put a deposit down on a 95 Civic dx. YAY BEATER. It's got 170k miles on it, none of which were hard miles. It has no vtec, no power anything except for steering. It just had a tune up, and everything feels great. The interior is in fantastic condition for the age. I can't wait to bring it home next week. I have to gather the rest of the money, register it, insure it, and then it's all MINE!! I'll post up pics next week.

Nice man. Civics are great beaters. That's a great car to have while you're in school still.

I'm not gonna lie, those were pretty hot Civics.

this is true. I'm def gonna slam it. and prolly do an intake and maybe an exhaust (no mexi-advance exhaust). and i'm putting in some oontz as soon as i get it...

don't bother with an intake and exhaust, it's still going to be balls-slow. go for appearance... maybe throw an oval muffler on it or something to get a little deeper tone and a better look.
i just ask that you don't waste your money on straight line performance...

haha thanks mike. i'm trying to get some passing power on the highway, not rice straight line power. I know it's a civic and i'm ok with that. i def want to slam it. I'm getting a new sound system in in the next couple of days so i'll put it right in. and i was thinking intake and exhaust for better gas mileage. i know i got an increase in my subaru with gas mileage when i did a cold air.

You might get better mpg, but it wont save you any money - takes a long time to recover a few hundred bucks spent to save 2-3 mpg.
go to home depot and invest in about 20 bucks of PVC piping and couplers....INSTANT INTAKE
It's just a matter of time...

i'm not going for a racecar here. i know it's a civic. why won't an intake and exhaust help passing power? and since when are you concerned with getting your money back? how many motorcycles have you bought in the past year? :o

Because you're working with a very, very basic 90hp motor to start with. The big bottlenecks are in the cylinder head, cam, and compression - even if you went further than an intake and an exhaust you wont see the same power gains (on a percentage basis) that you'd see on say, an integra engine. Stock honda airboxes and exhausts are generally pretty efficient designs, and I've seen quite a few cars making 20-25% more power than stock with a stock airbox, they arent hold the engine back.

I'm not concerned with getting my money out of my vehicles but I made money on all the bikes I bought and sold last year :dunno:
Simple economics - you are spending money on parts to get better gas mileage - I can only assume you want better gas mileage to save money, right? Well do the math. For arguments sake, lets say you gain 3mpg, from an avg 35mpg combined to 38mpg - and drive 10,000 miles/year at $2/gallon. It would take you 10 years to recover the $500 in gas savings.
Just sayin'. Take a vacation instead.
The CRX say about 11hp with intake and exhaust bolted on. it saw almost 24hp total with a cam gear and some tweeking on the dyno. there was no engine management.
D motors are werid about the cylinder head. Porting will get you power, but polish doesnt actually get power. The old Mugen race cars with D motors were ported and they left the rough cut in there. The Mugen engineers were asked why, and it was stated that the "smooth" air actually lowered the power gains.
on the stock D16A6 i was seeing about 30-32 mpg around town. After the intake/exhaust i was about 35+ beating on it all the time. The new DOHC ZC set up with intake/header/exhaust gets me about 40mpg beating on it around town.
in the end you arent going to get any real passing power out of the mods though. the DX trans is going to be geared so it wont get out of its own way in 5th gear. my SI trans is "okay" but if i put in the ZC high gear id lose mpg and gain passing power... because it would keep me much higher in the RPM range.

The A6 motor responds very well to mods, and is underrated from the factory. The CX and DX motors are a different animal. I forgot about the lame gearing.
True, the DX motor is a 1.5L POS.... but i've got a head laying around in the garage... for a fee we can up the compression and give you Vtec!
D16Y8 head would net you around 10.5:1 compression and give you a MUCH better cam profile. then you just hunt for an D series Si trans

RJ - I know you know your stuff and i was just busting your chops. I understand the motor has very little power but i'm not trying to break records, and i never said i was gonna spend 500 on an intake and exhaust. thank you for all of your input, i can guarantee i'll be asking you for something soon...
Kaan - i had actually considered the vtec head. how much do you want for it?
