Will the levees hold?
Do you feel sorry for the people who are still living there?
Will anything be different this time around?
Does the universe have it in for New Orleans?
Does God hate black people?
It's still possible it could miss NO but I'm curious what people's thoughts are about the situation.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

No the levees wont hold
They have a choice and can move, so the people living their can deal with it.
Only thing different is it sound like the Govt. is actually listening to the reports instead of saying "oh we'll be fine".
Its an act of god, so yes, he hates NO, J/K
Of course not......
God help those poor people. I hope it doesn't affect my drive to San Antonio next Sunday.

Whatever. May those "poor people" help themselves.
I say break the levees and let the sea take it. I'm tired of rebuilding nawlins.

(and I love the place)
either tell the environmentalist to fuck themselves and build the proper levees and dams, or sink the place into the ocean like it should be
It's not surprising why my company won't insure stuff in coastal areas like that. Ha!

either tell the environmentalist to fuck themselves and build the proper levees and dams, or sink the place into the ocean like it should be Don't blame the environmentalists, blame the Army Corps of Engineers for the poorly built levees. Parts of Florida are in similar danger of catastrophic flooding due to improperly designed/built flood control systems.
Not to say people who live in New Orleans shouldn't just leave but it's not necessarily that easy for everyone to move. But there is no excuse for people not evacuating this time.

well, every story has a few sides, but I have read reliable articles about how there major levee construction (and maintanence) was blocked by environmentalists due to rare pygmy swallow nesting grounds or some such shit.

To be fair, we should all try and protect where the swallowers nest.
I find this image telling.

You have that correct. Environmentalist groups filed injunctions for many years prior to prevent any further upgrading / reinforcement of the levees (and even basic maintenance). New Orleans is a fun place, but is still on sinking land... eventually we will have to say goodbye - and I only hope it's before taxpayers are bled from the jugular again.

Like a lot of facets of the Katrina disaster I'm sure there are several levels of blame to go around. I know the Army COE did an extensive study/audit of the levees and admitted that poor design and engineering flaws were the major reason they failed. If there was new construction that got blocked by environmentalists I'm sure that didn't help matters.
But then you've also got to put the blame on whichever legislators or judge(s) that allowed some environmentalist complaints to put lives at risk. I hope somewhere in the endangered species act they take that into account.
