Nah, I kinda agree. I think all our kids should be bilingual in some way. Maybe it's my liberal eliteyness, but I place a great deal of value on being able to communicate effectively regardless of language barriers, and one of the best ways to learn that is to learn a non-native language. My kids will be bilingual (maybe even know more than 2). That's for sure.
As for Obama, I think that both of his arguments make sense. In a country that has such a large spanish speaking population, we should all be at least trying to learn some spanish... I've tried to (not in school). At the same time, when I visit a foreign country, I try to speak at least a few words in their language, but I know I'll always fall back to english at some point. I guess I'm a bit biased here though...

I never understood how anyone could support that idea. English is the 2nd most commonly spoken language in the world, or maybe first, depending on the dialects you count for the chinese. English is one of the most, if not the most exacting and precise language that there is. This is an important thing for a society to have in order to beecome advanced. All programming languages are based in english, and english is the preferred 2nd language in most countries. Almost all technical and business transactions are done in english. Why would you ever bother to learn a new language other than curiosity, or some job function?

No matter what country you go to you should be expected to learn that country's language - residents of that country shouldn't be expected to know yours. If I went to work in or visit a foreign country I go in with the expectation that no one will be able to understand me and I will not be able to understand them unless I know their language. The money that would go towards the aforementioned bilingual education can be much better spent teaching kids about mathematics and technology - skills that will benefit them and this country in the future.

1. Just because english is the most commonly used language in technology doesn't in any way imply that it's the most common language. Nor does it imply that you need to learn it to live (prosperously) in today's society. At all. AT ALL.
2. Yes, if you travel somewhere else, you need to learn their language. I'm not excusing people from trying to learn english when they move to the US. I am saying that any country experiencing such an influx of immigration of non-native language speakers should be prepared to have a melding of cultures. In Los Angeles, there are 3.3mil native spanish speakers vs 4mil native english speakers. 48% of Latinos described themselves as having limited english proficiency. That's huge right? No. 43% of Asians said the same thing. If I were living in that community, that American community, that subset of our national community, I would make my kids learn spanish, and I'd expect that the spanish kids learned english. I would also teach my kids to be technologically literate. Call it crazy parenting. I'd much prefer my kids to be well rounded than be technological whizzes. One more thing, I'm not saying that we should make it mandatory for all students of public schools learn a second language and that it be spanish.
Oh, and another thing. People in Europe speak more languages than we do. Why? Is that good or bad? Are they more technologically inept than we are? In my industry, they sure aren't.

They're made in English when people who speak english are one of the parties because they can't be bothered to learn another language. Do you really think that business transactions between two Chinese are made in English? Really?
