Linds and I have bought a house!
Actually, we close on December 18, so we haven't officially acquired it yet, but we're in the process. It's a foreclosure, so there has been a lot of paperwork and such involved, but so far has been a pretty good experience. I just can't wait to move in!
A quick rundown:
5 acres
1700 sq ft
3 bedroom
2 1/2 bath
Stainless steel appliances in the kitchen
Hardwood floors in the dining room, kitchen, and breakfast nook
Berber carpet throughout rest of house
Wood fireplace (will probably convert to gas immediately)
There are 2 decent sized sheds, as well as a small barn-thing already on the property. Nearly the entire lot was cleared when the house was built, but it has become quite overgrown, so we're going to work on actually having a yard as a first step.
The house is dead center between Richmond and Charlottesville, and is maybe 10 minutes off I-64, about 3 minutes off of a major highway.
And a couple quick pictures. I've only attached a couple pictures b/c I didn't want this post to rediculously huge to give a "tour", and the colors of the house should be considerably different once we move in. Plus, it was getting dark outside when we were taking the pics
woohoooo!
kitchen
living room
breakfast nook
Congrats! Home ownership is a lot of work but is rewarding.
One suggestion: As someone who pays the gas bill for a gas fireplace I suggest leaving it wood burning.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
Looks great Dave, everyone is buying houses lately! I thought you already had a house near C'ville, so is this your 2nd purchase? I'm liking the hardwood floors, needs more 240Z

+1
There's no substitute for a wood fire in the wintertime.

congrats on the purchase! i'm diggin' the kitchen and i agree with the woodburn (despite having no experience with a Gas one) - i like the smell
Congratulations to you both! Dave I work for a company that services gas fireplaces. We've stopped installing them because they are such a liablity, plus we charge 159 bucks just to come out and look at the damn things. My advice is to stick with the wood burning, as if you look at gas logs funny they will shift and won't work right, plus like Deracola said, they just run up your gas bill.
Never the less, let Rex or I know if you need any help with the move. We have helped you all move this far and it seems such a shame to not get in on this action.

Scotty, I don't think I'm going to have a build thread for this one :-).
Goodspeed, we're renting the house we're in right now, which is just N of C'ville. This house we're buying is about an hour South East of there.
Thanks for the input on the fireplace, it's good hearing everybody else's experiences.
Nice job. Where's your work in relation to there (actually..where do you work, anyway?) ?
oh..and just to echo everyone else - gas is too expensive to bother with. Is your heating system gas, or electric?

congrats dave. buying all that land must've come from all the profits of your book that you wrote. so i assume you're gonna have some 60" attachment to the back of your Z so you can mow the yard?

Wow, congrats! That's a nice looking place. Are we going to have another rash of MM Weddings?
I'm surprised nobody's asked yet: are either of the shed or barn type things suitable for use as a garage? Maybe you could cut into the back of the house to install an pseduo-indoor garage

Hah, I wish I had credit to that book. Luckily no yard to mow right now, but we really want some 4 wheelers and I don't think it would be toooooo hard to make some kind of crazy contraption to mow the lawn with them :-).

oh..and just to echo everyone else - gas is too expensive to bother with. Is your heating system gas, or electric? House is electric heat, well water, and septic. So, the only utility I have to worry about is electricity. If we get a gas fireplace, we can fill it whenever we want.
I'll be commuting about 30 minutes, roughly half of my current commute. Linds will go door to door in 20.

We'll work on the wedding part, we both wanted to get the house first :-).
As of right now, the sheds are going to be perfect for storage of all the stuff in the garage and putting together small projects.
I haven't quite evaluated what the fate of the barn-thing is. It's further from the house than I would like, so I'm going to look into what kind of foundation it has and potentially moving it and enclosing to make it into a garage. Pipe dreams for now and might be more cost effective to just build the garage I want, but there's potential there. For now it will just serve as a cover to keep the track cars a little out of the elements.
Dave told me we can store some dirt bikes in the barn...
Maybe we could build a little flat track out on the back 40 and get a couple of CRF100's? MM battles, every weekend.
