Honestly this disgusts me. Suing the state for millions is not going to bring anyone back and is just going to cost the taxpayers (i.e. you and me). Why should I have to pay because some nutjob shot people? Should taxpayers have to pay for a lawsuit every time someone is murdered?
I'm sure some will say, "They're suing in order to prevent this from happening again," but that is hogwash. If they really wanted to do something to help prevent something like this in the future they'd be pushing to get more money put into the state mental health system and on-campus security.

Just look at our public school system I don't think it has anything to do with the public school system. I think it has everything to do with out of control lawyers and this pervasive victim mentality that has taken hold here. Everything is always someone else's fault and if its someone else's fault I should be able to sue them and get rich.
Really the tort system here has turned into a lottery.

It does, in a way. The school systems "zero tolerance" policies and knee-jerk reactions to everything propagate this attitude of holding the school/state/etc responsible no matter what happens to their little kid. Sometimes terrible things happen, thats life.

So VT has already offered each of these families $180k, and they're still considering further action? I would be very interested in making sure they did what was reasonable to prevent student deaths, but damn, $180k is generous I think, considering they really don't have to offer that at all.

eh, it's still hogwash, b/c 50% of whatever the settlement/judgment ends up being will goto in a lawyers coffers, fuck that shit.
special seat reserved in hell
Ridiculous.
I'm curious to know what they would have *liked* for VT to do.

I'm not surprised something like this has come up, not one bit. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.

You know, I wonder if the Washington Posted printed the names of the kids whose families are suing so that people can send them hate mail?

They would have liked for VT to have armed guards at all buildings at all times, metal detectors in every doorway, key card access to buildings and rooms, remote control gun turrets in every hall way, punji sticks lining the perimeter of the campus and ninjas in every dorm room closet armed with ninja stars and swords.
I hope the families of the victims rot in hell and are haunted by their children as they cash their settlement check on behalf of the tax payers that had nothing to do with the shooting.

Nobody who took the 180k will be suing, as they waived their right to sue by taking 180k.
But I don't think anyone took it.

If they offered that before the lawsuits that was their first mistake. By offering that they are pretty much assuming guilt/responsibility. After all, if it wasn't their fault why would they be trying to make it right?

...that's what i was thinking....
..either way, it's terrible that they're suing the state...

They would have liked for VT to have armed guards at all buildings at all times, metal detectors in every doorway, key card access to buildings and rooms, ... nope. that would be a violation of their 'civil rights' and they would have sued for that. then after getting that changed and their kiddies get shot up, sue again for not providing security.
its all hypocritical. 'they' say you cant take away someone's rights and commit them to a mental institution, or keep them from taking classes and have put policies in place to make it extremely difficult to do so. But then when the same psycho that everyone wanted to lock up goes out and shoots some people up, the same 'they' is suing because you should have known he was going to do that and you didnt do enough to prevent it.
im really biting my tounge to not play the political party card....
