Top speed of cars

Is there a site that lists the top speeds of modern cars. The reason I ask is because Joan has been telling me about how her students all BS and say they speed down 28N going 150+MPH's in their Ford Explorers, Oldsmobiles and of course, HondAcuras. I want to give my loving wife a resource that she can use to slam her retard students and get them to shutup about their ricer exploits.

But, eh, edmunds should have them for any car. But there's no point. I would inform my students that as a teacher, she's obligated to report illegal activity to the police, and that talk of such activities is not appropriate in the classroom.

ability to get up to those speeds in most cars on the road (150+) is pretty unattainable. even if the car is capable it would be really difficult unless you have a LOT of open road.

28N you could definately get to your cars top speed..it has some really long straight stretches, and really gentle curves

Just like so many drivers in Type-Rs are saying they're hitting 150 on the back-stretch at VIR. Sorry boys, but I'm still blowing past you, and I was maxing out at 135-145 (speedo indicating - 140 in reality). And as much as I'd like to think my speedo was incorrect in the wrong direction, I know it isn't. Hell, even a T1 Z06 is usually hitting only 145 (actual) on the back straight. Some speedos are really out of whack - most Hondas especially.

Andy - have Joan turn it into a math problem. Have them calculate how much distance they are covering at 150mph every 30 seconds and determine if it is actually feasible to go that fast in that distance.

Depending on the grade/level, they could go so far as calculating the horsepower required to go from 0-150 in 3 miles, etc.

Most of her students aren't too hot with the math nor the writing nor the thinking. She teaches at an alternative HS so turning it into a math problem isn't going to work.

The frustrating part is that pointing to the obvious limitations of tires, gearing, whp, aero and lack of runway hasn't stopped them so I need a definitive number.

Here is a number... the top speed of an S2000 is 150mph and it takes a good amount of time to get there. If their cars are slower than an S2000, they're just plain wrong.

For some reason I thought car top speeds were listed on Edmunds in the spec sheet, but I am apparently full of shit. Carry on. I know Car and Driver/Road & Track list top speeds in a spec sheet, like this one:

Ahh, I guess after all those tires blowing out they decided to govern them :lol:

A stock Mustang GT 99-04 (with the smaller tires) was speed limited to 126, with the larger tires it was limited to 146. See what your 'google' search turns up on that. I know those numbers are correct b/c I've been inside the EEC and seen them w/ my own eyes, and removed them.

At that speed the slip angle of the tires could effect your speedo by 3mph.

Most speedos are skewed significantly from the factory - some as much as 5-7%. I've found Hondas to be much worse than any other car though...

i was going in a straight line though? i definitely not an expert at slip angles, but could you explain that a little more. I always ask unk to explain more about them in class if he goes over them

i understand the speedo just being 'off', just not the slip angle reason.
