Top speed of cars - Andy - 05-17-2007 Is there a site that lists the top speeds of modern cars. The reason I ask is because Joan has been telling me about how her students all BS and say they speed down 28N going 150+MPH's in their Ford Explorers, Oldsmobiles and of course, HondAcuras. I want to give my loving wife a resource that she can use to slam her retard students and get them to shutup about their ricer exploits. - CaptainHenreh - 05-17-2007 Here's one for possible cop cars: Clicky-POW! But, eh, edmunds should have them for any car. But there's no point. I would inform my students that as a teacher, she's obligated to report illegal activity to the police, and that talk of such activities is not appropriate in the classroom. Also, to not be total fucking douchebags. - Sijray21 - 05-17-2007 lol maybe they were looking at the km/h portion of their speedo ability to get up to those speeds in most cars on the road (150+) is pretty unattainable. even if the car is capable it would be really difficult unless you have a LOT of open road. i wouldn't tell the students that because if they're stupid enough to attemp this and talk about it, they're probably stupid enough to try and prove her wrong and kill themselves. - HAULN-SS - 05-17-2007 28N you could definately get to your cars top speed..it has some really long straight stretches, and really gentle curves - Mike - 05-17-2007 you need a solid 250hp, a long straight, and very good aero to hit 150mph in a typical car. - Dave - 05-17-2007 Sijray21 Wrote:i wouldn't tell the students that because if they're stupid enough to attemp this and talk about it, they're probably stupid enough to try and prove her wrong and kill themselves. uh, survival of the fittest? - John - 05-17-2007 Just like so many drivers in Type-Rs are saying they're hitting 150 on the back-stretch at VIR. Sorry boys, but I'm still blowing past you, and I was maxing out at 135-145 (speedo indicating - 140 in reality). And as much as I'd like to think my speedo was incorrect in the wrong direction, I know it isn't. Hell, even a T1 Z06 is usually hitting only 145 (actual) on the back straight. Some speedos are really out of whack - most Hondas especially. - PDenbigh - 05-18-2007 Andy - have Joan turn it into a math problem. Have them calculate how much distance they are covering at 150mph every 30 seconds and determine if it is actually feasible to go that fast in that distance. Depending on the grade/level, they could go so far as calculating the horsepower required to go from 0-150 in 3 miles, etc. That'd shut'em up! - Andy - 05-18-2007 Most of her students aren't too hot with the math nor the writing nor the thinking. She teaches at an alternative HS so turning it into a math problem isn't going to work. Rex-I didn't see the top speeds of cars on Edmunds. Is it in the specs? The frustrating part is that pointing to the obvious limitations of tires, gearing, whp, aero and lack of runway hasn't stopped them so I need a definitive number. - Mike - 05-18-2007 Here is a number... the top speed of an S2000 is 150mph and it takes a good amount of time to get there. If their cars are slower than an S2000, they're just plain wrong. - Mike - 05-18-2007 More numbers (yay google): Ford Explorer: governed at 98 RSX-S: 142 RSX: 124 2000 Civic Si: 133 Olds Cutlass: 102 Olds Intrigue: 126 Need more? - CaptainHenreh - 05-18-2007 Andy Wrote:Rex-I didn't see the top speeds of cars on Edmunds. Is it in the specs? For some reason I thought car top speeds were listed on Edmunds in the spec sheet, but I am apparently full of shit. Carry on. I know Car and Driver/Road & Track list top speeds in a spec sheet, like this one: http://www.caranddriver.com/roadtests/7 ... x-v-6.html - white_2kgt - 05-18-2007 Mike Wrote:Ford Explorer: governed at 98 That's bullshit. I've had explorers well over 98... - HAULN-SS - 05-18-2007 Subaru Legacy GT: Governed at 139..some guy on the forum claims ungoverned on an oval track at 162 - Mike - 05-18-2007 white_2kgt Wrote:Mike Wrote:Ford Explorer: governed at 98 my number was from a 2006 model. - white_2kgt - 05-18-2007 Mike Wrote:white_2kgt Wrote:Mike Wrote:Ford Explorer: governed at 98 Ahh, I guess after all those tires blowing out they decided to govern them  A stock Mustang GT 99-04 (with the smaller tires) was speed limited to 126, with the larger tires it was limited to 146. See what your 'google' search turns up on that. I know those numbers are correct b/c I've been inside the EEC and seen them w/ my own eyes, and removed them. - Sijray21 - 05-18-2007 Mike Wrote:2000 Civic Si: 133 hmm...i must've had a 'fluke' one  i've actually taken mine to 136, although it was a '99 - white_2kgt - 05-18-2007 Sijray21 Wrote:Mike Wrote:2000 Civic Si: 133 At that speed the slip angle of the tires could effect your speedo by 3mph. - John - 05-18-2007 Most speedos are skewed significantly from the factory - some as much as 5-7%. I've found Hondas to be much worse than any other car though... - Sijray21 - 05-18-2007 white_2kgt Wrote:At that speed the slip angle of the tires could effect your speedo by 3mph. i was going in a straight line though? i definitely not an expert at slip angles, but could you explain that a little more. I always ask unk to explain more about them in class if he goes over them i understand the speedo just being 'off', just not the slip angle reason. |
