Jen was coming home from Roanoke today and as she was approaching Charlotte in the left lane on I-77 she had a run in with some shrapnel. there was a monster ass peice of angle iron in the road that she couldn't see and by the time she knew what it was, it was too late and she couldn't get over. it hit the front driver's side tire, and flew up into the running board. it got lodged in between there and the road and as she moved forward it pierced the rocker panel and went up through the door. it hit the running board with such force that it bent the mounts and slammed the board into the rear tire.
she pulled off OK and after yanking the metal back out of the rocker panel she found some good old boys who were really kind and helped bang the rocker panel back in place.
i honestly think it could have been a million times worse. at the right angle that shrapnel could have ripped open a tire, severed brake or fuel lines, or gone through someone's foot hock: i was thinking about you guys when i saw this because i know alot of you drive on big urban highways and have lower-than-average cars.
keep your eyes open and both hands on the wheels my friends. shit happens....

scott, you are having the worst luck ever!
you really do need to avoid ANYTHING you see in the roadway... when i was younger my football coach's daughter was killed by road debris... came right through the windshield and basically cut her in half.

Yeah - that's crazy dude. I have two stories
1) A guy in roanoke was driving down 581 and a piece of concrete broke off a bridge, went through his windshield as he was passing under - dead.
2) A guy was following a truck that kicked up a piece of metal in the road like 200 feet ahead of him...came back down through the windshield and hacked a guy halfway though the neck. Crazy time.

What a morbid thread. Um... I'm so glad she's ok. Wow. I wonder what's worse. Trying to avoid it and hitting another car or just slamming on the brakes and hoping for the best... eeeeesh
Thats a lot of destruction. I think I am going to swerve anytime I see anything in the road now hock:

i always either brake until i can tell what it is or safely swerve and people look at me like im nuts, now i know my caution is justified
Damn son, I'm glad no one was hurt. I bet she'll have some wind noise in there now!

haha...duct tape Jeff. done and done!
and yeah, seriously swerve away if in doubt about anything you see in the road. anyway insurance has pretty much covered it so no big deal, drives fine. just freaks me out thinking of what could have happened.

Jesus H, glad it wasn't any worse and that nobody was hurt! That's some serious carnage.
On the plus side, it probably would've ripped the Exploder in half.

ATL is notorious for crap on the highways, I hope you survive the next few years!
What's the solution? I mean, obviously if a cop sees something fall off a vehicle, it'd be easy. But that would happen like .1% of the time.
So do you start aggressively pulling people over that have questionably loaded vehicles or open tailgates and handing out heavy fines? Could be a lot of gray area, I'm sure plenty of people that didn't deserve it would get fined as well. Questionable legality as they haven't really done anything wrong until something actually falls off. But who hasn't been behind a truck (especially just about every dump truck with freaking rocks pouring out of it) that deserves a ticket?
Do you spend millions on a super cleanup crew that drives around picking up shit all day? Might be hard to justify. But when I see a damn muffler, tire, or driveshaft on the side (or middle!) of the road, I really wouldn't mind paying extra to make sure I don't see it again next time I drive by.
Does everyone have to drive around armored SUVs with bars on the glass? Sadly, many already feel like this is what they have to do to protect their families. I can't really say they're wrong to do it, but it sure sucks as far as solutions go.
The only thing that stops a bad guy with a van is a good guy with a van
that is insane! Glad to hear she is ok and the car is alright, but that really is quite an eye opener.
Man, the other thing is - I just realized - that is not an easy/cheap fix either. Let us know how much your estimates for repairs are? I'd have them replace that whole section of that rocker panel - if they just patch that, that's gonna rust out with the quickness
