Autocross Experiences
#1
Since a few more guys are really starting to plow into autocross and we have definitely seen an increase this year, I would like to make a thread to post up experiences with certain events, and organizations, feel free to add to this thread. I am sure I will forget a few.

CDC (Capital Driving Club) Based in Washington and MD, this is a good event for those that are beginners to autocross. Very easygoing and people realy help you. You could be utterly hopeless and still get through this autocross. This was my first 7-8 autocrosses and I found it great, but very expensive comparatively to SCCA. They seperate into morning and afternoon sessions.

WDCRSCCA (Washington Dc region SCCA)- Great experience for those that have done at least 1-2 autocrosses. VERY BIG Field, but you do get good track time and its mostly held at Fedex where theres tons of room and its a quick course. Have only done the fedex field 3 times.

Philly Region SCCA- Went up only a few times as it is far away (Cal Ripken Stadium) lot of room, not as much as fedex, but definitely a smoother lot. Smaller group, kind of like Blueridge SCCA.

Mercedes Benz Washington Area- AWESOME time here, small lot but holy shit lots of runs, cuz only like 20 people show up, so you get like 7-8 timed runs and then they have free runs for like 30 minutes and you get time but doesnt count. AND YOU STILL GET DONE by 2:00PM. Really cool guys and you dont need a Benz to roll with them.

Blue Ridge SCCA- Good, relatively medium in size, but lots like Verona are REALLY shitty, even though I did Verona a bunch of times, its really not a good lot. Their airport lot is MUCH better. But they are cheap, and a good sense of community, plus its close.

John Felton and NASA-X- Good group of guys, their VMP lot is pretty large so you get going fast and they typically have professionals create their courses, which I find much better than others. A tad more expensive but good, ive done them a bunch of times too.

Classing system-
The classing system of SCCA is completely screwed and places you in a class thats really awkward for some vehicles (mine especially). I prefer the NASA type classing based on modifications + base car.
CDC does not really have a classing system per se, which is one of the many reason why I like it for beginners.

I have currently decided to stop autocrossing as the differential I received is apparently a 2-way or a welded diff, so sharp corners are not my friend. But I am willing to go help anyone that wants an experienced autocrosser to give them a few tips. I know different platforms for autocrosses as ive run autocrosses in an mr2, gs-t, and miata, so I know fwd, awd, rwd both front and mid-engined.

There are however, some guys out there at the events that have run 10 times as many events as I have, so I dont attempt to know, just trying to help others as im "trying" to move onto road racing.

I will make it out to one autocross event that I have not experienced at some point (NASA autox on Summit). Sounds like a good event, plus I havent experienced it.

My only experiences are with BRR SCCA, great group of people, Verona course is a lil on the crappy side, but its local and easy to get to. I agree with the classing system issues, as I am in SM with mostly fully prepped AutoX cars running R-Comps, so there ii isn't likely, if i ever get good enough to compete for points in SM with a DD running street tires.

I hope to attend some NASA events, lil more expensive but you get more runs. Ill post up future experiences with BRR and give a review of the locations i attend.

What bolt pattern is on your wheels Justin? You could always share wheels + tire cost with someone running in a different heat (depending on how they're set up).

5x114.3, same as Shea and DJ obviously (Same car) problem is Shea runs a diff. offset, and DJ isnt gonna be autoxing any this season and runs the same class. I could always pic up a used set of R-comps off ebay but that would involve buying a 3rd set of wheels so, i dont think its worth it at this point in my autoxing endeavors.

I'll add one,

NCCBMWCCA, I run ONLY with them now (nothing against NASA-X other than the drive, and WDCR can kiss my A). If you are not a BMWCCA member you get wait listed until 5 days before the event, usually you don't get in but if you show up for the first heat they generally have open spots or will let you in, but the BMW membership isn't expensive and you get a pretty neat rag w/ it and these cool stickers and blue membership cards that have the BMW logo on them Smile. They run at the Bowie Baysocks stadium (5 minutes from my house, use to drive the racekar there, haha), also run at some police training ground a little further north and somewhere in NOVA, never been to that lot though, to far.

i've autocrossed at verona twice under BRRSCCA. it was a decent experience both times but the lot is crap. the gravel is bad and there are some washboard sections where i was sure my car would shake apart. both times i autocrossed with the accord and it was fun, especially the final time when i had some good-ish tires. its was so close to JMU it was great -- roll out of bed, grab your gear, drive 15 minutes down 81 and have a blast with your MM dawgs all day. then hit up qdoba on the way back Big Grin

BRRSCCA is a tight group of people but i wasn't wild about their classing. i drove novice STS both times, which worked well, but if i chose not to do novice i would have been destroyed. i'm there for fun regardless but i do like fair classing.

i also ran with Jay's Si at VMP under NASA-X. it was a much better event with a great course layout and a good turnout. it was a bit of a drive but who cares, if you go with your buddies it's a day well spent. i don't know what lot they use now but we used a large mall lot that, aside from having to piss behind a dumpster for lack of facilities, was clean and huge.

i like NASA-X classing better than BRRSCCA. John Felton runs a solid event.

WRXs run different wheels..they dont run 5x114.3.......

Oh and I would be interested in a set, if my car drivetrain wasnt built for road racing and drag racing. Dont worry I may be sending out my old rear diff and seeing if anything's actually wrong (ive had a few people look and it may have just overheated). May put that back in so I can go back autocrossing and easier parking.

And now I have to run special offset and at least 17s with my 13-inch rotors.

WRX's are 5x100 but Subies have funky high offsets like +55 or some shit.

I think welded diffs/solid spools are for drag racing. 1.5 LSD's are for road racing. A 2way diff works on both accel and deceleration. But you should take the welded diff on track and see if it kills you Big Grin

i think the '04s and previous are 5x100. i'm not sure why, but they switched to 5x114 in '05 and up. the stock 17x7.5 has the crazy 55 offset, and my rota 17x8's have a 48 offset

My understanding was that STI's had 5X4.5" and "regular" WRX's had 5X100. Tire rack agrees with me, but I've been wrong before.

Yes ALL WRXs are 5 x 100
'04 STi is 5 x 100 [17 x 7.5]
'05+ STi/STI is 5 x 114.5 [17 x 8.0]

Justin is correct in that we could run the same wheels but the offset would be too much of an issue.

Oh well, maybe you can get some new people who want to autocross that can run the 5x114's. "Heyyyyy buddy...what's your bolt pattern?"
