Engine/Car Codes
#1
Spawned from the e30 discussion, I'm going to put together a list of engine and chassis codes. Post up what you know and I'll add it to this first post to make it pretty. My Honda codes aren't exact (there are some 92-95 EJ Civics, etc), but if you're talking to an enthusiast, this would work.

Four Cylinder:
M10: 8V SOHC 4 banger, 318i, 2002 (Well, sort of 2002. We'll go with that.)
S14: 16V DOHC 4 piston, E30 M3.
M42/M44: 16V DOHC 4 Piston. 1991 E30 318, Z3, E36 318

Baby Six:

S62: 32V DOHC 5.0 8 Piston, M5, Z8

V10:
S85: 40V DOHC 5.0 10 piston. M5 & M6

M70: 24V SOHC 5.4 12 Piston. 750i, 850i
S70/2: 48V DOHC 5.4/6.0 850CSi, McLaren F1

I think I covered it all. Might be some weird one-offs in there, And i didn't cover the "N" motors, which are basically updates of any "M" motor. Engines also have multiple displacements, especially in Europe. A 2.7 Liter M20 would be a "M20B27".

You're right, of course. I meant to put 4.4, although they ranged in displacement from 3.5 to 4.9, the M62 never came in 4.0, unlike the M60. I was in a hurry.

how to read a toyota code:

first number - generation in series
letters before the dash - series

after the dash:
e - electronic fuel injected
f - economy valve train
g - performance valve train
s - direct injection
t - turbocharged
z - supercharged

so the 7M-GTE is the 7th engine in the M series, and is equipped with a wide angle, performance valve train, a turbocharger, and electronic fuel injection. the 1ZZ-FE is the first of the ZZ series and is equipped with a narrow angle, economy valve train, and electronic fuel injection.
