Street Tires vs. Hoosiers...

So,

I got my Hoosiers fitted this weekend. (Hoosier daddy!?) I'm going from worn-out Fuzion's to Grand Am Hoosiers with about 20 laps on them.

Any tips on race tires? I've never driven on "real" tires like this. I've heard they grip...grip...grip...gone, with no in-between. Turn in, mid corner, power on throttle, etc.

What can you guys remember from way-back-when?

They'll take 2 laps to get up to temp most likely, so just bring them up to speed slowly. Cold they'll probably still have more grip than the street tires though.

They will slide, but the slides are smaller and require smaller corrections to get it in line. They also dont make any noise when they start to let go, just gotta feel it in your butt/steering wheel. If I dont have all 4 tires sliding on the entry of T3 and T10 at summit, I'm going too slow Wink

I guess I'm not going fast enough through T10.

There's definitely degrees of grip for race rubber but it's more heat cycle and less about tread. I know mine are done when I feel like I'm driving on Flintstone rocks and no matter what I do I'm sliding in turns I shouldn't be sliding in.

good topic pete, i was wondering the same thing. i plan to have slicks hopefully by VIR in feb. and as discussed before, i am leaning towards the roofrack moreso than the tire trailer...

The hoosiers are not DOT radials. Wouldn't that make them slicks?

Most of us have to run a DOT approved tire.

Apoc, if you'd read my origional post, you would see that I am running Grand Am Cup Tires - Not the R6. I'm not racing, and thus I don't give a crap what is required/not required. They were dirt cheap, and I'm going to use them.

As usual this has nothing to do with this thread anyhow.

Evan, seriously, I'd love your suggestions on what to anticipate.

he might've been referring to my post. evan, yeah, i know slicks arent the same, but you knew what i mean. rcomps and not street tires. although i guess DOT radials could technically be street tires if you didnt mind going through a set everytime you drove anywhere.

Slicks are traditionally bias ply or canteleivered in construction and differ a good deal from DOT rubber that most production cars use. Not a huge deal, like i said, minor pet peeve.

Grand Am hoosiers are identical to R series DOT hooseirs except with a much harder compound to withstand endurance racing. I have heard the GA do harden a bit after a couple heat cycles so it may take a while to get heat in them.

I really dont have much to add to the discussion other than dont be afraid of them. Its hard to tell someone what to expect from a tire or how to drive it. I went through the same thing when I went to R tires and thought it would be a difficult transition but its not.

Its not really like an on/off switch. They break away quicker than a street tire, but as long as you are paying attention and dont grab big chunks of speed at once you will be just fine. Just feel the car.

oh and Pete, like said above, give them a bit of time to warm up, I know you like to go balls to walls on the first lap, but warm the tires up, that doesn't mean you need to do NASCAR zig-zag, just drive normally, a little slower. Also watch those brakes, the bigger tires/more grip will require more brake to stop as well, ease into it, you have 6 sessions, don't drive like it's your last one, or it just might be...
