Street Tires vs. Hoosiers... - PDenbigh - 10-09-2006 So, I got my Hoosiers fitted this weekend. (Hoosier daddy!?) I'm going from worn-out Fuzion's to Grand Am Hoosiers with about 20 laps on them. Any tips on race tires? I've never driven on "real" tires like this. I've heard they grip...grip...grip...gone, with no in-between. Turn in, mid corner, power on throttle, etc. What can you guys remember from way-back-when? Peter - .RJ - 10-09-2006 They'll take 2 laps to get up to temp most likely, so just bring them up to speed slowly. Cold they'll probably still have more grip than the street tires though. They will slide, but the slides are smaller and require smaller corrections to get it in line. They also dont make any noise when they start to let go, just gotta feel it in your butt/steering wheel. If I dont have all 4 tires sliding on the entry of T3 and T10 at summit, I'm going too slow

There's definitely degrees of grip for race rubber but it's more heat cycle and less about tread. I know mine are done when I feel like I'm driving on Flintstone rocks and no matter what I do I'm sliding in turns I shouldn't be sliding in. - Maengelito - 10-09-2006 good topic pete, i was wondering the same thing. i plan to have slicks hopefully by VIR in feb. and as discussed before, i am leaning towards the roofrack moreso than the tire trailer... - Evan - 10-10-2006 minor pet peeve DOT radials != slicks - PDenbigh - 10-10-2006 Evan Wrote:minor pet peeve The hoosiers are not DOT radials. Wouldn't that make them slicks? Regardless, how 'bout you contribute something positive to the discussion, Mr. Rookie of the year ;-)? - Apoc - 10-10-2006 PDenbigh Wrote:The hoosiers are not DOT radials. They're not? http://www.bobwoodmantires.com/hoosier/hsrdotradial.htm Most of us have to run a DOT approved tire. - PDenbigh - 10-10-2006 Apoc, if you'd read my origional post, you would see that I am running Grand Am Cup Tires - Not the R6. I'm not racing, and thus I don't give a crap what is required/not required. They were dirt cheap, and I'm going to use them. As usual this has nothing to do with this thread anyhow. Evan, seriously, I'd love your suggestions on what to anticipate. - PDenbigh - 10-10-2006 .RJ Wrote:They'll take 2 laps to get up to temp most likely, so just bring them up to speed slowly. Thanks for the useful info. - Maengelito - 10-10-2006 PDenbigh Wrote:Evan Wrote:minor pet peeve he might've been referring to my post. evan, yeah, i know slicks arent the same, but you knew what i mean. rcomps and not street tires. although i guess DOT radials could technically be street tires if you didnt mind going through a set everytime you drove anywhere. - Evan - 10-10-2006 Slicks are traditionally bias ply or canteleivered in construction and differ a good deal from DOT rubber that most production cars use. Not a huge deal, like i said, minor pet peeve. Grand Am hoosiers are identical to R series DOT hooseirs except with a much harder compound to withstand endurance racing. I have heard the GA do harden a bit after a couple heat cycles so it may take a while to get heat in them. I really dont have much to add to the discussion other than dont be afraid of them. Its hard to tell someone what to expect from a tire or how to drive it. I went through the same thing when I went to R tires and thought it would be a difficult transition but its not. Its not really like an on/off switch. They break away quicker than a street tire, but as long as you are paying attention and dont grab big chunks of speed at once you will be just fine. Just feel the car. - HAULN-SS - 10-10-2006 so, i just noticed evans avatar - is he really gay? I always thought that was just a joke. - Ryan T - 10-10-2006 HAULN-SS Wrote:so, i just noticed evans avatar - is he really gay? I always thought that was just a joke. I'm happy to have my thread hijacked by such an off topic unrelated question and even better response if it makes me laugh that hard. 100 Point goes to .RJ for the historically appropriate response. 1000 Points to Evan for the self inflicted targeting. HAULN-SS, sorry, guess you'll have to continue your search elsewhere. ;-). - Evan - 10-10-2006 thats The GayÔäó to you, buddy. - Maengelito - 10-10-2006 cuz thats exactly what you want trademarked - Evan - 10-10-2006 My family was around a very long time before a bunch of fags turned the word fruity. and Im taking it BACK! *cocks shotgun* on a related note, most families with the last name Gray, and (obviously) Gaye, along with some other permutations were originally of the last name Gay, and changed it within the last 100 years due to the mutation of the popular meaning of the word. Fucking sell-outs. - Apoc - 10-10-2006 FAGSssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss... the lot of 'em! My name is unique thanks to a kind immigration officer at Ellis Island. - white_2kgt - 10-10-2006 Evan Wrote:My family was around a very long time before a bunch of buttfucking fags turned the word fruity. Get married soon, just take HER last name. oh and Pete, like said above, give them a bit of time to warm up, I know you like to go balls to walls on the first lap, but warm the tires up, that doesn't mean you need to do NASCAR zig-zag, just drive normally, a little slower. Also watch those brakes, the bigger tires/more grip will require more brake to stop as well, ease into it, you have 6 sessions, don't drive like it's your last one, or it just might be... |
