Hey, I'm looking for suspension setups.
What I want:
a) a RAIL car
b) to know how to achieve this in the cheapest fashion
c) good parts decent price
1999 Eclipse RS
GSX Rims ( and boy do they look nice too bad they're just sitting in my closet cause they need rubber and I have no money :( )
Sorcier99RS Wrote:a) a RAIL car
not trying to be an ass or anything, but by that are you saying you want a car that handles like it's on rails? just checkin
if that is the case i take it you don't mind a ridiculously harsh ride? no ride height requirements? and will you be doing all the install yourself?

i dont care what the ride feels like, but i do need a little height
and yes, i want it to feel like i'm on rails
as for the install, no, i'm going to get everything i need, and take it somewhere.
Not mechanically inclined when it comes to cars.

you want adjustment i say a set of TEIN coil overs, you want no adjustment just slap on some Konis and Tein Springs or Eibachs.
Heres a linky to DSMtuners Upgrade path....

If it "handles like its on rails" you're not going fast enough
IMO, you cant beat Koni + Ground Control for the price!

Tein Flex's FTW. Cheap is definitely not the name of the game with those tho, especially if you get them with the JDM EDFC g00dness:

But realistically, where is the EDFC worth it...
IMO, Ground Control + revalved Koni's is where its at, this coming from the dummy who is running some stupid jdm suspension, and will most likely be buying Tein RA's, because the price I can get them at is money.

I freaking love the EDFC for daily spirited driving. You can stiffen it up for the twisties and then push a button and it's back to somewhat soft for regular driving. It does of course make you illegal for a lot of racing events, but I don't do many of those.
I've never driven this car on a road course, so I couldn't say what the benefit is during that type of driving. I'd imagine it's pretty sweet though, since you could fine tune your suspension without having to get out of the car and physically adjust your coilovers over and over.

What is JDM about the EDFC? It is offered here, it is in English...

<--- confused I'm not sure either. I think he was talking about his current setup on his car, not the EDFC.
Also confused

+1 for konis and GC coilovers. I am extremely happy with my setup and for only spending slightly over 1000 I couldn't be happier.

I was referring to the POS GAB coilovers I picked up from an importer, that I use on my car now.
konis and ground controls are the only way to go for an eclipse. Teins are just junk, compared to a koni's favorable rebound/compression ratios. The onyl setup I would want over konis is a JIC, hotbits, or custom setups after that.

JIC is junk too.....
What is "hotbits" ? I've never heard of them...

Tires and lots of camber will do more then most suspension setups. Unless your just looking for the feal of "handling like its on rails", I guess you mean no body roll? Like others said, Koni's FTW.

JIC? are you crazy?
I guess the 1g dsm that beat out ferraris in socal road racing speed unlimited class using JICs was an idiot. He should switch to something else.....because you said it was junk.....
Hotbits......the rally and coilover suspension setups? I cant beleive youve never heard of them...especially if your trying to talk about higher-end suspension setups...

no, he's not. they may be great when they work, but they are very prone to failure and their service department is a complete joke.

Go buy a train, and there is NO such thing as a great handling car for cheap. Sorry, there just isn't.

Yes, JIC is junk. Their service is awful, their dealer network is awful, and the product is awful - and if it breaks or want a revalve, you're going to be up the creek. I've also been in a car with JIC's and it handled like ass.

I could go further, but I'm not going to waste anyone's time.

No, I've never heard of them, and if you could provide some sort of info on them I'd like to read up on it.
When people say "high end" when you talk about suspension then you are going to get into the $400 and up per damper price point - and your options are Koni 3011 or 2812's, Moton, Penske, JRZ, Mugen N1, etc... they have established dealer networks and everything you buy is going to be custom valved for your application, spring rate, etc... no off the shelf solutions. Then you will need to consider the testing/tuning required to dial in a high-end setup, which most people do not have the time, budget, tires, Data Aq and often trackside support to do - I know that I sure dont have the $$ to go through 2-3 sets of tires and several test days just to dial in a set of dampers.

so this topic reminds me of what i'm doin at work right now. i cant get into the specifics, but part of it relates to suspension and damping. the new audi tt is using active dampers with magnetic particles in it and as the input voltage is adjusted, the damping adjusts within milliseconds.
Quote:An innovative technology is used for the shock absorbers: Audi magnetic ride. Instead of the conventional damper fluid, a magnetorheological fluid is used ÔÇô in other words, a fluid whose viscosity can be influenced by an electromagnetic field. This effect enables to damping characteristic to be influenced electronically at will by applying a voltage to the electromagnets.
Audi uses this property to supply the correct damping forces in every driving situation, thus optimising ride comfort and road behaviour. A computer equipped with sensor technology determines the prevailing driving situation in a matter of milliseconds. The driver can choose from two driving programs depending on whether they want to drive in a very sporty style ÔÇô in which case the magnetorheological fluid exhibits high viscosity ÔÇô or more with the accent on ride comfort

its pretty interesting and more car companies will be using this technology for their higher end models soon
