so you know those washers that you're supposed to replace on the drain plug everytime you change your oil? i assume that its made of some sort of soft metal that expands to prevent leaks when its heated up. subaru uses these weird crush washers that have a sorta lip on them, but i was thinkin that i could just buy a handful of copper washers for a lot cheaper than the buck and change per washer for the suby crush washers. tell me why i shouldnt do this...

I don't change mine, but if I did I would use the copper washer like what is on my canton pan now.
I just got a bunch from a Subaru dealer, they aren't expensive.

at Toyota, we changed the washer with every oil change. I don't see that as necessary, but it prolly is a good practice once a year or something. Hell, I didn't even know the supra had one before I worked there, and I'd had the car about 3 years at that point. IIRC, Thayer's had been on so long that it actually disintegrated and then he had an oil leak, but the Toyota gaskets aren't metal, they are actual gasket material.

There's a reason for that... if it doesnt crush, it might not seal.

exactly the point of a crush washer, it crushes to help seal.
i use a new one every time.
No washer on the SHO.
GL has one on there though, and it needs to be replaced (leaks a bit.)
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

there's something just not right about paying close to $10 for 6 washers that dont bear any significant load. i'll just go buy a handful of copper washers
