MM-Preferred Tires

I just thought it might be nice to see what tires ya'll have used that you like. I went to rotate my tires the other day, and found that all my peeling out came to good use, and I had finally turned my rears into slicks.

What I wanted in a tire: be sticky, and be pretty (as in tread pattern). So, I figured I'd go with Michelins or Falkens (although I looked at some hankooks too). And since the Michelins were around $200 each, I looked at the azenis, however I heard that they aren't too swift in the wet. Soo, drumroll please: I got the Falken FK451s - they are ... well, either high performance summer or all-seasons, depending on the website.

Anyway, they were cheap ($100 for 225/45ZR17s), and real nice and sticky (not so easy to peel out anymore), but kinda loud as far as road noise goes. But, I'm real happy with them! Any other tire recommendations from ya'll out there?

in that price range another good option is the kumho ecsta mx. i have them on the rear of the s2k... for $100, you're not gonna get the best tire out there, and i didn't. while they do have really good grip, they wore very fast. the fk451 will wear more slowly than the mx, but will also grip a good bit less. if you're daily driving, i'd prefer the wear. an excellent in-between option would have been the avs es100, but they tend to get noisy.

i now have a pair of bridgestone re750s in the garage which should grip about the same as the mx, but wear more slowly according to others in the same boat as me. at $150 they might be more than you wanted to spend, though.

From what I've seen the AVS ES100s wear out faster than the MX does. I ran the Kuhmo 712s for about 20k miles on the supra and they still had tread left, even after multiple auto-x's. Not extremely sticky in the dry but they were a great rain tire. Currently running Nitto 555r's and they have excellent dry traction, shitty wet traction and have pretty much the same noise level as the 712s did.

Very sticky and great in the wet. You don't mind buying tires every year right?

Kumho MX is good stuff. Check out some Fuzion ZRi for super cheap with decent grip.

I wasn't impressed with the wet traction in the nitto at all. It could be a different experience on track, but on the road those nitto's don't grip near as well in the wet as my old kuhmo's.

Kumhos are good for the poor college student... I got a set for 360. 225/45/17 (front) and 245/40/17 (rear)

I have Sumitomo HRT-IIs. I like them. They have a low treadwear rating but have lasted pretty well. I drive the Sebring hard (for what it is) and it is a heavy car. Great wet and dry performance. Sadly, NLA. But the one that replaced it looks nice too. Sumitomo seems to be a forgotten brand. The tires on the Daytona are BFGoodrich KDWs (yes, used from an SRT-4).

Find another tire that grips as well as those do in the dry, then see how the wet traction is. What I meant was it is very sticky in the dry and great in wet (not something you get in the same tire. I don't know what kuhmo's you had but the 712's I had were great in wet but absolutly sucked ass in dry.

^^^Point taken Chad, I see what you mean. They don't grip as well as the kuhmo's in the rain, but will out perform them in the dry any day of the week. They are pretty decent in the wet compared to the g-force kd my older brother had.

Jeff, I used to run the Sumitomo HTR-Z on my Z28 and I liked them. Even with the low tread wear I got a pretty good number of miles out of them. They had great straight line traction (good for lots of torque and burnouts and such) but I wasn't very impressed at how they handled twisty conditions. It may have had something to do with the camaro being heavy, but they always felt like they were folding over when you started turning.
