Strange Valve tick after scenic drive

OK, oil light came on at the top of the mountain. Let the car cool down then the oil light went off when i crancked it back up. started driving oil light came on at lower RPMS kept it in higher RPMS to keep my OP up. Get back add some oil, light continues to flicker. so i get out there today, crank her up, no oil light, but ive got louder valve tick than normal. Any ideas??????

adjust your valves. you either f'd something up or you're just imagining it (i've done this countless times).

Its possible something in the cyl head is damaged - when the oil light comes on, the engine is really low on oil pressure (most factory oil lights are a 5-10 psi switch) and the cyl head is the last component to get oil from the pump.

Locate the noise by putting a screwdriver to your ear and moving the other end to various places on the cam cover. Then pull the cover and look for anything scored, worn, loose, or otherwise out of whack.

Do these engines use rocker arms/followers or hydraulic lifters?

i know i'm not being much of a help but if its a hydro lifter head they will often get really loud if your oil is a little low. mine sounds like a diesel pretty much all the time, regardless of oil level.

Well if you run them without oil, they will basically collapse. May be fine for now, or you may float a valve at 4,000 rpm and your engine a splode.

I was about to say lifter tick, and then I remembered you have a neon...lol just playing. best bet is to just go ahead and take the valve cover off. Even if you find the problem without taking it off, your gonna have to take it off to fix it.

neons have the lifter tick as well, has all the time, just louder now than normal, i mean lifter tick when i said valve tick, the damn ticking noice in the head.

hmm sounds like you need new lifters. Both my "neon" engines don't tick at all. You may want to put a oil pressure gauge on the car and see if the oil pump is still pumping good. I ran the avenger almost dry on oil one time it never ticked just the oil light flickerd top it off and it's good to go. It also has about 190k miles on it.

DEFINATLY borrow/buy an oil pressure gauge and test it ASAP! If it came on and was flickering when hot, the only reason it isn't now is because it's cold. But it's probably still way below spec. And I don't think you're going to see anything by removing the valve cover. If you're lucky, and it's not a pressure problem, then maybe just sloshing around when it was a little low only damaged something in the head. If you're not, it's a worn oil pump or worn crank bearings.

Hmm yes he does. Trust me I know. His DOHC engine has lifters. The "rocker arms" in his engine pivot on the cam, and one end is on the vavle and the other is on the lifter.

Oil Pressure is fine Big Grin, i think the oil leak was comming from my autometer sending unit, the bolt that you connect the signal wire to was just spinning around?????? and oil was leaking out, apparently when i went up the more oil than expected leaked. still have the problem with the tick, gonna pull the VC and check it out.

RJ is referring to "lifters" in the traditional V8 pushrod sense. By this definition of lifters Justin's engine has no such thing. Now if you are talking to TurboDodge or Neon people he does. The reason being is Mopar (and thus most aftermarket companies) call the lash adjusters "lifters." The lifters in a DOHC or SOCH Chrysler engine are not lifters but hydraulic lash adjusters. So you are both right... The lash adjusters pump up with oil pressure and put resistance on the back side or the rocker to keep it in contact with the cam and the valve. If they see low oil pressure the spring inside them fails and that makes a terrific noise as the rocker arm bangs against the cam's roller surface, the valve, and the top of the "lifter."
