3g eclipse (bubble type)
do they have interference or non-interference engines?
roomate's g/f's car's timing belt broke. She's just wondering about the maintenance costs. I would think it is non-interference since it bascially shut off and didn't seize up. Almost as if she didn't have spark or fuel.
My g/f has a 3.0L V6 in her Dynasty. It is the same engine (roughly) that would be in your eclipse if it is V6. It is non-interference. If it is a 4-banger I can't remember if they are Chrysler or Mitsu. I think it both cases they are interference. I am however not positive.

it's a 95 Eclipse RS - 4cyl n/a
just call Mitsu dealer fool! They should be able to tell you. However, I think that would be the same engine as Justin, maybe he can help.
if its a 95 RS, it is an interference motor. If she broke her timing belt, she could get incredibly lucky and not bend any valves, odds are she did. I broke my timing belt goin about 65, 1 1/2 yrs ago. Died like i had lost fuel or spark like you are saying. Bent 8 valves, bout $800 in head work had to be done. I was lucky none of the pistons were damaged. You may be better off finding an engine out of a wrecked car, but im pretty sure your donor car has to be a 95 cause there are ECU/wiring differences on the 95s compared to the 96-99 eclipses. Oh and for clarification its not a 3rd gen its a 2nd. Good Luck. Only way to find out is take off the Valve cover and turn one of the cams, if the rocker arms are loose/fall off, you got some bent valves. if thats the case pull off the head and check your pistons for damage.

anyway...Jayray lemme knwo if i can be of anymore assistance. If you wanna check it yourself a Chilton manual will get you through it pretty easily.
would turning the car over allow you to hear anything hitting, or is that just a dumb idea...i'm thinking the latter

cant turn the car over without a timing belt, and putting a timing belt on is a pain in the ass in itself
right, i meant could you somehow just turn the bottom end to listen if the pistons are hitting?

Terrible idea unless you wanted to finish off what the broken timing belt started. I can't imagine a Neon engine being all that expensive, just get a junkyard one.
Two feet.

you know, you're right...
...the shop told her it was the timing belt, but when we tried starting it (possibly a bad idea) the car turned over. That's what made me think the distributor cap or fuel fuse blew. It sounded like my car when i pulled the fuse and tried to start the engine.
either way - the car is getting towed by her dad down to their home in roanoke where they can work on it. Thanks for the info!
