For those with Satellite Radio
#1
I just got this email from XM, informing of this BS bill. Just wanted to let you guys with satellite radio know what is going on. So get in touch with your senator once again!!!!

The Virginia Senate will be voting this week on a bill (HB 568) that would create a new tax on satellite radio. Please call or email your state Senator to say that you oppose this new tax. You can find out the name and contact number of your Senator at the following website:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform">http://conview.state.va.us/whosmy.nsf/main?openform</a><!-- m -->.

HB 568 is intended to tax companies that provide similar services, like telephone companies, cable companies, and satellite television (DBS) providers, in a similar manner.

But the bill creates NEW TAXES on satellite radio, even though satellite radio does not compete with telephone, cable, or DBS.

The bill specifically exempts traditional radio, Internet radio, and music downloads from the new tax WHILE IMPOSING A NEW TAX ON SATELLITE RADIO SERVICES LIKE XM.

Please tell your Senator that you OPPOSE this new satellite radio tax, and ask him or her to vote ÔÇ£NOÔÇØ on HB 568 as currently drafted. Tell your Senator that satellite radio should be EXEMPT from this tax, just like traditional radio and Internet radio.

You can find more information about the bill at: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?ses=061&typ=bil&val=hb568&Submit=Go">http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504 ... &Submit=Go</a><!-- m -->.

Fucking Democrats. Are we in a fucking budget crisis? NO. NONONO. There's a bunch of guys in a basement somewhere thinking of things they can tax.

"Hey, what about mud? Let's tax MUD! And then have state trucks MAKE mud and then tax for MUD TRUCK use. DOUBLE WORD SCORE!"

Fuckin tax scrabble or some shit.

This is bullshit bill to raise money number two.

Although really, it looks like HB 568 already passed, and doesn't specifically name Satellite radio, but seems to levy a 5% (!!!) tax on all kinds of communication services....as if we don't pay enough tax already.

Ugh, that blows. But hey, its always easier to raise taxes or deficit spend than it is to stop wasting money.

Well they've been underspending on transportation so maybe they're pumping up taxes so they can fund all the new stuff they wanna do. Who knows though, I need to follow this stuff closer.

we'll see how much it raises my rates, XM isn't that expensive and i listen to it everyday at work via the internet so i'll probably continue to pay.

10% increase would leave me with an additional $1.40/mo

Sure, but more contructive commentary is preferred, IMO.

If my boss hands me a requirements document for some project that I dont want to do I dont throw it out of my cube, cry about it and say I'm going to sit here and do nothing.

At some point you have to grow up - either pay the tax, or dont use the service. It is what it is - everything is taxed. Sales tax, gas tax, cigarette tax, cable tv, federal tax, state tax, etc. I dont necessarily agree with adding additional taxes, but if they are going to throw a tax on a new service like XM/Sirius then they better do it now while the subscription base is fairly low - because it will be passed on to the consumer in the end. If they did add a 10% tax on it, I'll pay an extra $.70/month. I think i can manage - its not going to break anyone's bank. Indifference? Sure.

After reading this a little more closely, is this an *additional* tax or a new tax scheme?

Point taken.

But I usually dont do that until after the thread has already derailed and speeding downhill, out of control.

You mean like now?

Frankly, I don't see anything in this bill that singles out satellite radio for particular tax or punishment or anything.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. I'm just pissed because I pay enough taxes on my cellphone thankyouverymuch.
