Carpet / Sound Deadening

I'm finally replacing the carpet in the Lightning. It wasn't in *great* shape when I bought the truck. After 4 years of mud, dirt, sodas, motor oil, and the blood of countless slain migrant workers, I ripped it all out. I ordered new stuff from 1A Auto (which came highly recommended via the NLOC), so my real question is "What to do about sound deadening?"

I figure I might as well do *something* while the interior is apart - with all the exhaust, engine, and road noise, I can hardly hear myself think. Long trips are painful. I'm not trying to win any audio competitions, but right now I can't listen to anything much quieter than RATM. All of my Kenny G CDs are just going to waste Rolleyes

Dynamat is expensive, B-Quiet is cheaper (~ $240 for 100 ft^2), and FatMat is the cheapest (100 ft^2 for $99 on eBay). Have any of you guys used or would recommend anything in particular?

Yup. If this were any other vehicle, I'd be doing the same thing. But on a 4500+ lb tow pig, I'll gladly trade a little weight for some peace and quiet Smile

Well, I used some sound deadener from <a class="postlink" href="http://www.mcmaster.com/">http://www.mcmaster.com/</a>. You can get their products cheaper then e-bay junk and it works 100%. All you are doing is adding mass to the metal to absorb the vibrations and noise before it enters the cabin. MC-carr there has many possible solutions to your problem. "
Adhesive-Back Damping Sheets" were my choice. I paid 75 shipped I think.

Got a link or something more specific? Navigating the McMaster-Carr website is a nightmare.

it is all over the Sebring. Works VERY well. Good quality stuff. Easy to apply (need a heat gun) and it stays put

Fatmat is good stuff. I dont know about thee other things. Definitely do fatmat other than dynamat...

can't you just round up all the bits of tar and crap that Chad, RJ, and Chris have removed from their cars recently and toss it in there? I'm sure they could be coaxed into selling :lol:

I ordered the FatMat. It was cheaper, and doesn't require a heat gun to install. Should be here on Friday - I'll put up some pics the the "Project Lightning" thread to detail my progress.

I think you will find if you don't use a heat gun it won't stick. There is almost no automotive adhesive that does not benifit from heat.
