I wanna throw this out there to see what you guys think of the mid to late 80's AE86's...I've been looking on the intranet and seeing what they go for and I'm thinking of trying to find one this summer to make it my AutoX whore, and possibly do some HPDE's. Let me know what you guys think, good or bad. I know they make great DRIFT cars and i do love to go slidewayz

Well what do you want out of the car? There's lots of good, cheap cars to start out with Smile IMHO, the ricer/initial D/drift craze has pushed prices up on those cars to the "more than its worth for what you get" point. Although if the craze kept up, you could always sell it in a year or two for what you paid for it, they are pretty neat cars.

RJ - who thinks an FB RX7 would make a nice drift car... if you can tame the snap ovasteer.... Big Grin

i don't know much about the 86, talk to Blair- he loves his

other options, all RWD, all fairly cheap
mkII supra
FC rx7
Nissan 200sx
Nissan 240sx
mustang
lots of other stuff, just thats off the top of my head
consider them all, look into parts availability, mod availability, ease of repairs, etc when deciding

i like 86's alot....that being said, i can't see them being cheap like they should be anymore. like RJ said, their prices are out of control unless you're buying one from somebody who doesn't realize what a cult following the car has.

some things i've noticed about these cars....they are pretty much destined to be slow, unless you do some engine swapping or boosting. they rust out, and i believe they use a solid rear axle, which i'm personally not a fan of, although it is effective. also, seeing as how these cars are somewhere around the age of granite/petrified wood, there are alot of general parts on the car that will most likely need to be tended too.

I'd recommend an N/A FC or a 240. The FC might be a little bit easier to sneak in on the cheap since the 240's are getting supa popular.

a ghetto 240 can be had for a grand, give or take. the AE86's are carbed right? that would be an issue with me, especially jap carbs, they're half the size and twice as complicated.

AE86's are 1.6L fuel injected. SR-5's are single cam, GT-S is twin cam.

IMHO, unless you find someone who doesn't know what they have, you'll either pay to much or get a piece of shit.

They're cool enough, I guess. Slow, with a solid rear, and alot of them are rustbuckets. I say if you really want a small rear drive car, get a 240, an FC, or a mid-eighties muscle car. Camero, Rustang, etc.

The corolla is an awesome choice.. stick with it and just look for a cheep one.. cheep i mean blue book like 700 - 1000 because someone doesnt know what they have and all the HYPE about them. mine was 900 from a guy who had no clue. since i have had mine i have found 2 more for under a grand. they do tend to rust bad so watch out, you can get parts for next to nothing and they seem to be everywhere. RWD kicks ass. not to fast but deff. not slow you gotta remember they only have 115 hp but they weigh nothing. its not fast at all but its fun expecially with the low ass gears

mine is very solid... no rust.. 196k.. start everyday and no problems with tons of miles put on by me... i beat the hell out of it... slide it whatever... TOYOTA RULES THE WORLD.. the best part is thats it was only 900 bucks (bone stock) so they deals are still out there

another option is a nissan 240.. they are cheep and very similar in performance. but a corolla is just sooo much cooler..

by the way if you are looking for one you want a 85-87 GTS only

those are the only RWD performance ones... stay away from sr5's

just drive around looking for the big ass GTS TWIN CAM 16 down the side.. when you see one follow them and ask them to sell it.. chances are they wont know what it is and money talks.... thats how i find em.. and i have seen at least 3 in harrisonburg that i havent been able to catch up to

lol, seriously, 3 grand is WAY too much for that piece...

the only reason you'd get one is if it was rwd, the fact that it's fwd makes it completely undesirable IMO....and it's pink
