Has anyone ever had to go through the process of getting a lost title for a car?
I'm curious as to how difficult it is. How cheap does a car need to be to take the plunge, or is it rarely worth it?

Is it already in your name? Or is this for buying a car where the seller doesn’t have the title?
If it’s already in your name, simply go to the DMV, pay $12, and they’ll print you a new title the same day. Way easier than I had expected, but it saved me a 4 hour trip to go get the title back home.

Bruh, unless this is some kind of unicorn, it's not worth it.

What Brandon said.
If the seller doesn't have the title, ask him to go to the DMV and they can print one out, it's not a big deal at all. Even offer to meet them at the DMV and offer to pay the $12 for it. When they balk at this, it means they never titled it in their own name, or it's not their car to sell. Run away.
If the seller doesnt want to give you the title, there's options (i.e. mechanic's lien). It will take 60-90 days and involve paperwork and mail and certified letters, but its not a huge problem.
If its an antique car/motorcycle there are services which will do this for you.

Yeah, not a rare car but a great price and relatively clean and an easy flip if the title can be acquired.
The post made it clear they didn't want to bother getting the title before selling due to "family and health issues" so who knows what's really up.

Well there’s your reason for the “great price”

You're not getting the title... but that said, see if you can find a police station to run the VIN to make sure its not stolen or has a lien, and make sure you get a bill of sale - possession is 90% of the law.

Yeah, in most cases, buying something in good faith means it's yours in the end unless it's confiscated.
I'll try to run the VIN somewhere. We're talking like $200 delivered to my door. I'll do some legwork. So they can't be bothered to get a title but they can deliver the car to you? Something sounds wrong here. Are they selling a relatives car (possibly without permission).

May not be the case here, but possession of a stolen vehicle is a crime. All that matters is if a "reasonable person" would have a way of knowing it was stolen, so save all communications about why the seller doesn't have the title. I would also ensure the Bill of Sale states the seller is the legal owner of the vehicle and mentions the missing title.
