1999 BMW M3 - Hellrot on Black 138k Miles $14k
#1
I bought this car ~8 months ago after a year long search for an E36 M3 that wasn't a dumpster fire.  I wanted a four seater that was fun that my kid could ride in.  A week later and my son was born.  Then I tried baby seats in the back of it and wasn't comfortable, not for my first born, maybe my second.  I held onto it as a car just for myself, but it kind of stinks the drives you do by yourself (work, maybe an errand...okay 99% work).  So fast forward 8 months and I bought a car with anchors for baby seats and a step up in safety.  Now, I don't have room for everything.

This car is in fantastic shape but it is not a collector car so please expect small scratches and evidence of being driven.  I bought it to drive it!  There is clear coat peeling and damage to the front lip.  It doesn't detract from the car but cold use replacement.  The front seats show a little more wear than the pictures show justice, but considering this is a 1999 they are in great shape and have no tearing.

Half the modifications/maintenance were done by me, the other by the previous owner.

Frame this. Give it to your youngest on their graduation day. "Congratulations or whatever."

To think I sold my 99 M3 in great shape with less miles for $8700 3 years ago. They're fun cars for sure, but I don't think they're quite worth what they are going for these days.

Understand that E36 M3s have not aged well and with them being in the $6-$15k market for more than half a decade has resulted in the Sub $12k market being made entirely of neglected and worn out piles. Compound the fact that Hellrot examples seem to be commanding a premium and you have what results in 100k+ examples being 12-15k and ANYTHING under 100k miles is $15k+.

I don't dictate the market, but I sure as shit buy the best example I can. I paid more for this example than I have for any other E36 M3 I have bought before including a Dinan Supercharged example because of the maintenance and care taken on this one.  I can understand your sentiment as I was shocked when I started searching for this one at the market.

The market 3-5 years ago of $8k E36 M3s needing minor work is a distant memory.  If it's original on an E36 at this point...it needs replaced.

I didn't mean that to come off as a dig towards your pricing. I'm with Stephen where I just don't see the value in these cars at the prices people are paying for them. I am sure you will get your asking because people like you and the rest of this club are obsessed with these cars.

I love this car and I believe it could be "worth" the price to the right buyer. However, even if I had the money, I'd be torn between this and spending a little bit more on an e46 or even something way newer in the low 20's. CPA low mileage ecoboost mustangs are only like $21k.

I think this car will take a very specific buyer which I'm sure will take no time at all but this is going to someone who will either do what Dj was planning or some old dude who's going to slap a bmwcca badge on it and park it in his garage. And I feel like it's the latter.

And then goes on the forums to talk about how great of an investment he made, not how well it drives Wink
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

A little more?  I bought my E46 M3 for 12,000 and it's in pretty good shape overall.  The only things that have actually broke since I bought it is an 02 sensor and a timing chain tensioner.  Everything else has been mods or preventative maintenance.  The myth of all E46M's costing at least $20k either up front or in repairs is complete bullshit.  You just have to be smart about which car you buy.

I agree but I feel like some of that is luck. Idk. I bought my e36 for a "deal" and it was the hellrot car from hell. I see you guys finding these deals, and just wonder what you do differently. I never even see those cars listings. Like I know my excitement to get a "nice" sports car blinded me on my first m3 and I would definitely walk away if i looked at that car today.

The s2k, I think I paid a little under market but the seller was in a tight spot but I think it was closer to the market than the m3 was. That car has been mostly fine but it's also a Honda.

Also, my comment about a little more was more meant for "similar" examples to DJs car. Super meticulously maintained with records and what not. Usually those go for above 14 unless you find a good deal like you did.

And rod bearings and valve adjustments and ripping subframes and routine alternator changes and front differential weepage and rubber deteriorating interior. I could go on and on.  Its a BMW, its going to fall apart and need maintenance.   We bought my mom's E46 M3 for $14k 8 years ago and it was very very good to us, they are definitely not $20k cars, but they are definitely maintenance intensive!

Have a pretty serious buyer at $13k (MM/friend pricing), just waiting on his car to get picked up from a buyer.  Otherwise I would be on BAT/CL/Facebook.  Right now its just on MM, word of mouth, and RRAX.  If I dont have cash by Sunday night itll be up on BAT/CL, I just didnt want to deal with scum till I was forced to...
