Today, Rob came over to my house to bleed the brakes on his car - easy job, no sweat. Get all my tools out, Rob states that the lug nuts on his car are on very tight and he couldn't get them off the last time he tried. Judging by the size of his tire iron I see why it might have been a problem getting the nuts off. I take my 1/2 in drive socket wrench to the first nut on his right rear tire - no luck, the nut won't budge. OK I thought, I'll get the tire iron out of my car, which is breaker bar sized. Take off the first three lug nuts on the tire, all which were on very tightly and required the majority of my strength to remove. Fourth nut, same drill, pressed down hard on the nut - not budging, not budging, sickening crack. OH SHIT hock: . Nut and stud broke off as one piece. Decided to say fuck it and tighten the remaining 4 up, now the brakes are still mushy and Robs wheel hub needs to be replaced in the near future.

Morals to this story:
1. Lug nuts are not supposed to be torqued over 200pds
2. If they are torqued tight as hell, don't be the guy trying to get them off.
3. Never work on someone elseÔÇÖs car, cause you can break something.
4. Don't spray paint a wheel while it is still attached to a car. Ever.

Moral 5: Never push down on the lugnut to loosen it, my older brother broke two of his knuckles that way. Actually, he was tightening them and his torque wrench broke and he punched the pavement and broke his knuckles. But either way, be careful, even little jobs like changing a tire can be a health hazard.

I have had my se-r for 3 years, and have never snaped a stud. In those three years, the lug nuts have never been put back on without a torque wrench. I do have a few spare studs just in case though.

don't get a new hub. Get 5 new studs.

A new hub will be $$$. New studs are .75 a peice.

Well if you have to remove the hub to replace the studs then you might as well replace the wheel bearings while its out. I wouldn't replace the entire hub but if its old you might want to do that too.

I dont know if I can remember a time working on my car when I didnt bust my knuckles on something. Its just bound to happen. When im trying to get something like that off that wont budge, i'll usually put the breaker bar parallel to the ground, then use my body weight (if a cheater bar wont work, or if I dont have one).

Go to an autoparts store like Fairfax Autoparts, buy a tap for the thread pitch and size of that lug (I have one if you drive to richmond to borrow it)
cost $7

Go to home depot, invest in a $20 set of titanium bosch drill bits, these will become your best friend for brokenor stripped bolts (The set includes 10 or 12 various sizes IIRC)
cost $20

use a drill
cost $free

drill out the stud with a bit smaller than the diameter of the bolt
retap the hole with the tap you just bought
go party

total cost $27


and next time use an impact gun, repetetive smacks with an impact tend to break bonds of rust/paint/corrosion and help get suckers out
