Hey everyone! Man this year flew by, and I’m happy to say it was one of the best years, largely due to being the treasurer this year in MM.
This year was a great success, and I would like to thank all the officers that helped me this year. Taylor, Matthew, and Sam helped me throughout the year, and helped me learn about running the club more than ever. We tried to think outside the box this year, and do events that we never had before, which I believe was both fun and a great building block for next year.
Next year, I would like to run for the office of VP. My experience as an officer this past year has opened my eyes to what it takes to run this club, and learning/working with a team to coordinate something awesome (like the car show). I believe that coming from being the treasurer, I can bring some important things I’ve learned, and can also help the new treasurer with both the apparel order and keeping the bank account full of money for events.
There are a few things I would like to see happen next year, and this stems from things I have seen this past year, both as an officer and a regular member:
1) More Top Gear nights- these are cheap and very easy to do. I would be happy to hold them at my apartment, if people are willing to drive out to North. This also keeps club members active, and can give us all a chance to hangout. I would be happy to pick people up and take them back to campus, especially for people who don’t have wheels at JMU.
2) NASA and Track Days- again this year, I feel like we did much better getting people to the track and to auto-x. These are important as they help current students connect with aluMMni, as well as teaching them about NASA and getting them to understand how everything works. We pushed the track this year, and more people showed up. I think we should reserve a van to head down to VIR this year, as I have never been (and need to go!).
3) More Eastside Dragway- I for one love the easy $20 we pay Friday nights at Eastside to go drag racing. You can run all night till they shut down, and you can bring whatever you drive. When we went in the fall, the turnout was huge, and everyone had a fantastic time.
4) Apparel- A soft and quality t-shirt will be offered from the start, and offer more unique items that people want.
5) Auto-X- I like Taylor’s idea about getting the college solo back to the form it was years ago. The event sounds like fun, and with the size of MM and the surrounding areas car clubs (CCVT, etc.) there is no reason we couldn’t coordinate and make this happen. I have some friends at VT who I know are into this, and will be working with them to make it better than ever.
6) Increasing Member Size- always we are looking for new members. I wish I could count how many times I was told “oh! I didn’t know you guys were a club!” To remedy this, I plan on making sure we send out a mass email the first couple weeks of school, as well as work with other officers to help spread the word about MM on campus. Also, a key part of that is getting the apparel order in ASAP so we can get our MM swag out to our members so they can wear them around campus.
7) Car show- What a fantastic event! I believe we had so much success due to our sponsors. I would like to get more this next year, and make the car show even bigger and better as always. This past year was a great building block, and we can use it to add on for the future shows. Also, the pairing with the auto-x is just too perfect, and officers should coordinate with Ray to try to keep that a staple of the show as well.
8 ) More communication- the Facebook chat is great for keeping all of the current students in contact with each other, and even some aluMMni who have joined and keep track of what we are up to.
9) Wrench days- we all wrench on our cars. Why can’t we just pick a day at least once or twice a month and just work on some cars and hangout together? This year multiple times I have had MM’ers ask me to use my garage, and I am all for it! I would be happy to do that again this year, and get people to come help or hangout, as I know many of my funniest and most memorable experiences in MM have be us average mechanics working to fix or upgrade our cars. (*cough* Matthew Walker clutch install at Dave’s *cough*).
10) Winter- Winter is always a down time in MM’s yearly cycle, as no one tends to do anything with their cars. I believe this has changed, however, with the addition of the Refrigerator Bowl (which I ran- FANTASTIC beginner event) Auto-X and of the amount of off-road guys we have had join in recent times. I would love to get some MMers to go on an off-road trip, and contact the local groups to see if we could hitch a ride or coordinate something with them. I know Taylor and Colton know people like that, so that would be a great opportunity if we could set something like that up.
Overall, I feel like this year for me was a fantastic learning experience, and I feel as if it has prepared me to take the next step up to VP, as well as help new officers in their tasks. The list above is just a start, and I hope next year will be bigger and better than ever!
Thank you so much for reading, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or shoot me a message on Facebook!
