Hidden Gem in Waynesboro
#1
Unfortunate circumstances brought me to Waynesboro on Saturday for the first time. As I was heading home I caught a flash of some old cars inside a storefront, so of course I had to turn around. Turned out to be the home of Porsche nut, Weldon Scrogham and G & W Motorwerkes, Ltd. After spending some time interweb stalking, it seems Weldon and his son Cole are kind of a big deal in P-car land, so maybe some of you guys already knew about them. Weldon mentioned he used to race but now spends his time restoring and judging at a few shows (casually drops Pebble Beach)
His store was really well done, and he took time to show me around to the shop area where he had more amazing vehicles in progress.

It might make a cool MM field trip on a cruise one day to see the cars he has for sale in the store, now on to a few photos.

Cole's Car, won the 2010 National Porsche Parade Concours in Lake Charles with a 299.3/300 score.

It's no Channing Rig, but not bad.

That 356 and early 911 doe. Unnnnnnnf.

Fun fact, out of all the cars I've ever driven, in all the different situations and weather I've driven in, I still think the most challenging driving experiences I've ever had was getting a 1960 356B around the block on a warm, sunny day and the damn thing probably has 60hp, maybe.

Everything is difficult. They figured "fuck it, it's a sports car" and didn't bother to install a choke, so getting it started after a dormant period is just as spiritual as it is scientific. None of the switches are labeled. The brake pedal offers no response or feedback until it does, at which time the 155mm period-correct tires immediately lock up, regardless of your road speed. I never dared to put it through a corner over 15mph, but I imagine the tires would've offered something similar to their braking performance. Changing gear reminds you who's really in control of the situation, feels like a VW bug 4-speed but more stubborn.

That being said, as terrifying as the car was to drive, I have never, ever, ever, ever felt cooler behind the wheel of any other car in my life.

Big Grin I invited him to the show, told him I'd stop by with a flyer in the spring. could be the only college car show with a guest pebble beach judge.

oh, and the showroom is just part of his collection, said he has more 'toys' in his 14 car garage at home. Confusedhock:

Ya'll want me to talk to Cole Scrogham about this. I can shoot him an email now if you want? I'm sure I can get our car show penciled in on his calendar. Just need to know.

had the feeling someone here would already have a relationship with one of them. Yeah Julie, I think it'd be cool to have them involved in some way if they are interested.

will also humbly volunteer for transport duty in case they wanted to bring a car or 3 up. =)

Speaking of which, any discussion on karting this year?

Also, I swear to god I bring this up every year for the past 5 years, and they always say "oh good idea for next year". CONTACT RAY SCHUMIN AND SEE IF YOU CAN PAIR AN AUTOX SUNDAY WITH OUR CAR SHOW SATURDAY.

Smile

Edit: Ray Schumin has also agreed every year but said every year he was never contacted. If we can get a date on the car show, I will contact him and coordinate it myself.

Yeah, I'll talk to him the next time our board meets. If he's not at the meeting I'll email him. He's quite busy so we'll see. But I can see what I can do. Between Rex and I we know A LOT of people in this area, especially car guys.

We've talked about both, DJ. Karting is up in the air. It'd be nice to use the money for social events. We have a ton planned this year. Like we're tailgating this weekend. I personally think it'd be cool to skip a year of karting and pocket the money to actually do other things.
