"I would have bought ____ if it weren't for ____."

Saw this on Miata.net and thought it was interesting.

What cars/motorcycles have you considered buying but decided against for reasons other than "I didn't have an extra $20k sitting around"?

For example, I would have bought a Subaru BR-Z if it weren't for my already owning a Miata. Decided I didn't need two similarly-sized/shaped sports cars and instead went the hatchback route.

Also, I would have bought an RX-8 if it weren't for the finicky motors and poor MPG.

Would have bought a S1000RR if I hadn't already owned several inline-4 bikes.

Would have bought a MV Agusta F3 if:
-there was a dealer closer than 5 hours away
-they were on sale by the time I got my Panigale
-the fueling wasn't rough and unrefined

Would have bought an RDX, if they could tow at least 3500 lbs.

Would have bought an FG Civic Type-R or RSX-R if they were sold in the United States. They are two of the few cars that are a no-brainer buy for me.

I would have bought a Spec Miata/E30/Spec3 if it weren't for the expensive "spec" motors that are current or coming in the case of Spec3.

I would have bought an S2000 if it weren't for the lack of torque/weak differential/lack of race classes.

I would have bought an e36 325i for chump car if cheap SCCA IT cars weren't so available.

Would have bought a '99 Merc E300 TD a few years ago if they weren't all automatics.

Or

Would have bought a relatively late model BMW 120d or 320d if they existed in the states.

Does that happen in Spec E30 now? I'm going to laff if it has.

Not necessarily as blatant as in Spec Miata, but yes. McAvoy had a built motor in his Spec3 car apparently within the first year.

Seems inevitable. As soon as someone wants to win enough, someone is going to introduce built motors to a spec series. Question is, how much do they gain from that? A tenth here or there? A couple of tenths?

I don't think it's that rare, and certianly not shocking. If you want a reliable spec or anything racer, you rebuild the motor. I mean, it's not chump car. :dunno: SE chief instructor was running a rebuilt specE30 motor 7 years ago. You just have to hope the rules don't allow for anything but stock and assume people will build to the compression and overbore limits.

I have bought (and sold... revolve that door, dog) a lot of shit.

I would have continued to buy (and sell) a lot of shit I dont need if I didnt buy a house two years ago.

Most notable on that list

I would have (sold my Ridgeline and) bought a B7 A4 or S4 Wagon if it weren't for being spoiled by owning a brand new Honda

And, runner up goes to a tie between an E46 M3 (so much want) and a Daytona 675 or Street Triple (fuck shit I need a motorcycle again)

I can pretty much say that anything I really wanted and had the funds, time, and opportunity to buy...I bought.

Carpe diem, motherbitches. 90 times around if you're lucky, and maybe half of those you actually get to have fun with...then she's done. Don't waste it.

I would have raced karts if there were a decent organizing body around

So racing an M3 is cheaper.....?

Nobody every claimed a spec class would'nt stop people from spending money. A spec class keeps the money from making as much of a difference.
If you're good, you can still out-drive the money Wink

i can't believe nobody has solved this dilemma on the east coast yet. anybody have some investing money to toss around?

i would have bought an RX8 if Mazda would stop tripping over their own dicks and either put a damn DISI engine in it or figure out how to engineer a reliable rotary. everything except the dismal reliability and crap mileage is exactly what i want in a car.

^ Ooh that's a good one. I've always said I wanted the RX-8 body with the MS3 engine in it. I love the chassis, looks & fit and finish are pretty good, but the rotary drivetrain just does nothing for me.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
