I just got offered this for a trade in for the convertible. I HIGHLY doubt I will accept the trade, but I didnt even know S4s existed then? Do people know anything about these?

Those cars are neat/interesting and pretty much rock solid but... I have to think your M3 vert would fetch more $$ and be easier to sell outright.

I didn't know they existed either. I'm 100% sure its finicky and horribly unreliable and a terrible idea. HOWEVER, those Audi I5s sound AWESOME with an exhaust, and it's pretty cool looking aside from the wheels.

Those cars were built before everything was an overcomplicated elctro-magnetic vacuum operated whirlygig widget to do a simple thing. But unless you're into 90's audis and want to boost the shit out of it I dont see the point.

hahaha, i was looking at that post the other day wondering when i could get a road trip out to CO. always loved the Urs4, and yeah, as others said they didn't become such a basketcase until the b5's
btw, what's your id on BF...you know, just so i don't send you any awkward emails wanting to trade my s4
i saw the bat signal and ran over an old lady to get here. prepare for poor advice and hyperbole.
they are known as the urS4 ("original" S4) and were the only variant we got in the states with the 20V AAN turbo I-5 engine...which is one of audi's masterpieces, and the one to build if you intend to do silly things with your car. They are very, very robust and overengineered from a mechanical standpoint and are from a time in audi's existence where they built to a standard and not a price, much like mercedes of the same period. Its not unusual for those cars to push big power numbers with over 200k on the unopened engine. They have a devoted international aftermarket and many interesting parts exist to upgrade all parts of these things.
but like any Audi they are NOT simple or necessarily cheap to own due to parts prices and increasing rarity. there is also no getting around that they are heavy, bulky cars that prefer to haul ass down a twisty interstate in 4th and 5th vs being tossed through a local back road. they're laid out strangely due to accomodating an AWD tranny and a longitudinal 5 cylinder (radiator sits behind the driver's headlight, the engine runs up to the grill and the turbo is behind the passenger headlight). like most German cars its a bizarre mix of Torx and metric stuff. many of these cars were bought to be used in 4 seasons and after 20+ years corrosion is going to be fun times for DIY anything.
i personally don't see how these cars will continue to drop in value, if for no other reason than audi fans swarm to them for their superior driveline parts which bolt to many smaller 90's audis. they are classy, understated missles and they were rare here when they were new...now the few remaining ones are still sought after.
here's one of them going 220+ mph at bonneville, because that makes sense. soak up the noise.

I was waiting for Scotty to chime in
I actually like the Audi in this case a lot more than the M3. You already have one M3, why not add a badass rare old tank of an Audi to the mix?

And wow at that Bonneville vid! That dude had that car absolutely pegged, I can't imagine the feeling of going that fast in a giant early 90s brick

:0 that engine is completely in front of the shock towers. Not like half... But completely!
And awesome! I didn't know the history on these. The guy is a bit shady which was my hesitation and on top of the fact that I could use the vert money to get the m3 v8 done leaves me in a bind.
Really really cool. I mean if someone wants it for $5500 I can work with the dude...

that is a tough call. i hate to say it but I'd probably roll it into the e36V8, because you know that thing will be so awesome.
the urS4 is the kind of car i'd want to obtain from a well known, serious owner. there are just a lot of potential headaches from deferred maintenance on an old german car that was so expensive when new.

Awesome car. Best motor to ever come from Europe. It's commonly called the euro 2j. But not in your best interest in a trade unless you want it. To me it's 171625526272 times cooler than a vert/ auto m3.
