Can't you jump the diagnostic port and count the CEL flashes?
That's what I've done on all my OBD1 cars.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

The hell if I know - OBD1 is greek to me. I just looked at like the first 5 google results and nothing obvious came up, so you must be wrong.

I dunno, do they? I was trying to avoid buying something that I'm probably only going to use once.
Peake Research seems to make a nice one for $140 - these things seem manufacturer specific too...I dunno much about all this.

OBD I doesn't have it's own "code reader" that you'll be able to find, except for maybe GM/FoMoCo products.
OBD II is where all that shit got standardized.
Your best bet is to search the intertubes for the key/pedal/fuse sequence you need to make the CEL flash the code at you, then compare the code to what it's in a table.
If you're lucky, this will be in a haynes manual. If you ain't, you should still be able to find it on the internet.
Some ECU's (nissan and honda at least) have a light on the ECU itself that flashes codes. My 240SX did that. What kind of car are we talking about?

Yeah I didn't know the magical way that would take me 10 times to perfect to make the code flash on the light, so I couldn't try it...and now the car is like 3 hours away. It ran fine so I'm not stressing about anything, I just wonder what it was. I thought OBD1 was way more standardized than it apparently is.
No beans yet!

I bought a Peake R5/FCX-II in case anyone needs to read or clear codes or anything. Should be good for 1987-2000 BMW's.

You can usually get codes pulled for free at AAP or other car stores. Dunno if they can do OBD1, but I know they can do OBD2...I've gotten them read before.

Thats exactly what I've always gotten the 325 to tell me its secrets, but theres still always multiple things that trigger the same codes.
