The smart oil companies (namely Chevron and BP) are vigorously and actively exploring alternative energy sources because they know petrol won't last forever. The smart auto companies are also doing the same thing because they want to be poised to take the lead when the alternatives become cost competitive. As we speak they're actively trying to improve the technologies to that point.
The problem right now is that stuff like fuel cells and electric cars are not cost competitive with gas-powered cars yet. In some cases the performance is not close enough either. That's why we're seeing the intermediate solution of hybrids, biodiesel, and ethanol. I think we can also buy ourselves some more time by conservation and improvements in mass transportation efficiency.

that and fuel cells dont quite have the energy density that petroleum has. for the amount of power fuel cells and batteries have to generate, the weight and heat from them causes a lot more problems and are much more costly to fix than the 100 yr old design of the internal combustion engine

for a while Natural Gas was billed as the next mass market energy source. Exponentially more available than oil, clean, and even performs well. (Dodge made a cool concept sports car powered by it about 5 years ago)
..but...judging by the gas bill at my house, those bastards have hitched a ride on the skyrocketing oil price bandwagon... so it may not be cost effective at this point anymore

I'll remember that audacious claim when MM Chili Cookoff time rolls around. You better prove it.

i think it's probably less about coming out of your ass as much as your body expelling pure evil from it's poisoned bowels

gas prices suck a dick... I dunno, it makes business hard. The price of everything will be going up as transportation costs get higher.
