What the hell is going on with the gas prices. If this keeps up, I'm going to have to get a second job to afford to drive to my first job. It's already 2.76 for regular around here. So by the middle of the summer, 3.50/gallon is a definitely possibility.

Be thankful our gas is not as expensive as it is in Europe or Japan. And don't for a minute think it won't get worse within the next 10-20 years, especially as India and China modernize.

In the long run, it's good because it will drive us to conserve energy but that doesn't mean I can't be upset about it and don't get me started on the gas industry's insane profiteering.

Honestly if gas prices get prohibitively high before we actually experience a shortage of available fossil fuel that would be better. That way people's behavior would change before there is a true crisis. Ideally America would lead the way in alternative energy because it would put us in an excellent position as the leader in the post petrol era.
Just sucks that fuel cells and electrics are not ready for prime time yet. But high prices could be a forcing function for both.

Alternative fuels will become more readily available as the price of petroleum skyrockets, and then a cheaper replacement will be there to take its place. We aren't there YET, but we will be.

I've heard the arguments on both sides. My particular suspension stems from organizations such as AAA and other industry analysts say that though most of the arguments used by the oil industry are valid, the numbers just donÔÇÖt add up.
The simplest way to put it is, industry analysts whose full time job is to study the oil industry donÔÇÖt buy the industryÔÇÖs argument which leads me to believe something is not kosher. Also, Gulf coast refineries are not running at peak capacity. The last number I heard being thrown around is 65% post Katrina down 5-7% from pre-Katrina levels. Nationwide, refineries are running at 87% down 5% from pre-Katrina levels. I suspect that the industry enjoys record profits and artificially chokes production in order to maximize profits. Also, there has been an increase in reserve gas inventories at the refineries.
The last defense of the oil industry though is that they are being required to run more ethanol in their gasoline instead of MTBE which further pushes up the price for gas.

exactly. cleaner burning fuel will cost more to produce with more ethanol mixed in. so now that someone is actually trying to do something about slowing emissions affecting global warming, we get more complaints about gas prices. i dont blame basic economics, i blame the bush administration. *cue firestorm*
