What are you thinking? If you want a budget rwd car with low power that you PLAN to swap engines with, go for it. Otherwise, they're poorly weighted and underpowered. But hey, they're reliable!!!! However, you could argue the same for the civic. I drove the one chris was test driving and that was an S14. I was not impressed. If you want a car of similar.... yeah... buy an NA 2nd gen RX-7. They're very reliable (although not up to a 240) and they are weighted SOOOO perfectly. The NAs feel like butter to shift and are a complete driver's car. A TII on the other hand is a piece of shit.

oh, and jack, what do you mean about the 240's not being weighted well? do you mean weight distribution, or weight of the controls?

as for my advice, i dont have any real experience with any of the cars but i would probably spring for the DSM. i love 240's but i doubt you will find one to your liking that is all that cheap.

1: There's an AWD Laser in the Valley Trader for a Grand. SOMEONE GO BUY IT! I'm not even kidding.

2: You drove an S-14. That was your first mistake. The S14 handles like a dead sow compared to an S13. They're big and heavy, and they have a luxofart Mark4golfesque suspension because Nissan (God knows why) somehow had the idea that all of their cars had to be quasi-luxury in the late nineties. I guess they completely forgot about that whole upscale division they own. You know, with the smooth, supple, luxurious ride? Maengsmom? Or was it Infiniti? Something like that. Anyhoo, an S13 is worlds apart from an S14. Ok, maybe not worlds. But with a little suspension work, they're gold.

3: While I'd love to have a rotary, Dave swears he'll never touch one. I say: "But they're so damn cool, I want one." And dave says "No," Oh well! Besides, finding an RX-7 that don't need a complete engine overhaul around here is like finding, well, something really hard to find. I'm out of metaphors for the day.

What are the significant suspension differences between the S-13 and S-14 chassis? Is it just shock/spring/bushing tuning? If you're replacing all of that, is there any significant advantage of one chassis over the other?

Well, it's mostly shock/spring/bushing. But there's also a question of chassis stiffness, but you can get around that with judicious amounts of swaybars, anti-roll bars, etc.

My point, though, was that stock-for-stock, the S13 handles alot better. Yes, it doesn't have the "front amidship" of the FC, and no, it doesn't have a "perfect 50/50" distribution, but driving an S13 hard, and then driving an S14 hard, you'll notice the difference. The S13 also has a stiffer chassis. (the coupe, at least, and no, I don't have any scientific evidence to back that up.)

S14's have their advantages:
Better seats
Better parts interchangeability (primarily differential related)
5-lug wheels (on the SE anyway)
Better seats (So nice, I'll say it twice)
And a slightly larger aftermarket.

That said, S14's are disgustingly overpriced. An S13 is just a fantastic freakin value. Period. S14, not so much. I'm not a big fan. Plus, I think the S13 is nicer looking. Particularly S13 Silvia. Rawr!

anyway,
According to expereienced 240 guys who track or race them, Despite the heavier weight, a S14 240 will always be faster than an S13.

That doesn't make any sense to me, but I don't talk to folks who track or race 240's. I can't think of a single reason why an S14 would be any faster than an S13. But all I've ever heard, be it C&D/R&T, Dr. Preece, or whomever, is that the S13 is every bit the equal of the S14, and a little stiffer stock for stock. You could be right, and probably are, but to me, the extra teeny-weency bit of performance edge that may or may not exist in an S14 does not justify the rediculous premium on price.

1993 SE Coupe: 3,548 (retail)
1995 SE Coupe: 4,881 (retail)
(from Edmunds Note also that in 1994, there was only the S13 convertable in the US, which blew monkey)

That said, in the buyers market for an S13 vs an S14 (and i was in it for a looong time), the price dispairity is much, much larger. And S14's don't have a HUD. That should settle it for anyone! Big Grin Bling-bling on the headz-up, y0!

(p.s. I think pop up headlights in all of their manifestations are ugly and stupid.)
