Alright. As all of you know, I'm selling the b00sted pig b/c I don't like the way it handles, it's been a money sucking-whore, and lots of other reasons and heartaches. Obviously, I'm not going to track the mkIV, and especially not if that is also my daily driver. Sooooo, what do you think I should buy? I'm looking for something that is fairly reliable (so no rotaries), under 2 grand (doesn't have to run but needs to be easy/cheap to fix), and still decent looking. I'd like it to get decent gas mileage, but fun to drive, and serve primarily as my daily driver/track slut, leaving the IV as a possible track car occaisionally but primarily to drive for fun. Should have a strong aftermarket and handle well enough that you can have confidence in it on the track. Here's what I've come up with so far:
AWD DSM: So what, I'm infected with b00st. This would be a badass daily driver and seems to be pretty reliable, definitely easy to make faster.
Civic: Probably keep the stock motor for a while and TRY to blow it up, resulting in the need to do a swap. Probably an early-mid 90s. Easy on gas, not the fastest in the world, but still a lot of fun.
S13 240: Rex has really gotten me interested in these. Fun to drive, easy to work on, ample aftermarket, RWD, not too bad on gas, looks terrific, cheap to buy and maintain.
WRX: Great to get around town, b00st, still pretty far out of my budget though.
vtAk prelude: sweet looking car, not slow, don't know too much about it though.
E36: probably the only BMW that I actually like, although I know absolutely nothing about them or what kind of options they had. Pipe in here guys, you know me pretty well and what I would like. I also recognize it's probably out of the price range, but good to keep it in mind.

No comment aside from what I made bold... BAHAHAHAHA... Maybe you didn't read my other thread where I said I was at Chris Hawley's today and not one, but two DSMs were sitting in his garage on jackstands with motors and various stages of disassembly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the perfect car for a college student. Easy to make fast, fun as hell even relatively stock, easy on gas, low insurance cost.

Ugly.

Ummm, about $15k too far out of your budget. Stick with something you don't need to make payments on.
vtAk prelude: sweet looking car, not slow, don't know too much about it though.
Very nice car, bit of a premium on them, higher insurance, not as many parts available.

One in decent condition is probably out of the price range, but looking at a busted one that runs well might be doable. Awesome cars, motor will feel almost the same as your IV's.

Dave, dave dave dave.
You know that if you don't buy a 240, you'll say "what if?" to yourself for the rest of your life.
Besides, you can't afford any of that other shit, save for the civic, which sucks balls.
Buy something WITH balls. Simply, a 240.
Besides, you can blow up all the engines you want in a 240.

first generation AWD DSM. If you dont want it running you can pick up for about 500 bucks if not less. Most of the old ones are under 3k running in decent condition but DSMs are kinda known for tranny troubles. The 1g are really ugly though, if you're worried about looks get a 2g but if its gonna be a track car i say get the 1g.
My second choice would most likely be the 240 just cause theres soooooo much you can do with one by the way of aftermarket.
Third choice, civic, seriously.......what CANT you do with a civic? and 40mpg is a nice touch too
those would be my top three, my guess is you're addicted to b00st and youll never recover so you should go with the DSM

a dual cam car is hard to find for $2k though, and the miles are always very high.

Looks like you want it to be cheap and reliable. And though you want it to do track duty, you didn't specify fast. That's good because you won't ever get all 3.
Now, because of youre requirements we throw out:
The AWD 1st gen DSM: You will be hard pressed to find a reliable one for cheap. You could get lucky and snag one that hasn't been modified or beat to shit, but I doubt it.
The WeRX: Out of your budget. By far.
The Prelude: Also out of your budget.
The e36: Out of your budget...
That leaves the Civic and the 240.
I say the 240. RWD OwnZ, remember that. And when you get the nerve (or maybe the cash to sink into it) you have many cool engine swap options.

i guess I should mention, since a lot of you guys are pointing it out, that the expensive ones aren't totally out of my budget. The idea is to pay off the IV with the sale of the III and stay debt-free for a while, if practical. That said, I can plunge myself back into debt and pick up one of these more expensive options, although I think I would like to have some more money to play with instead of making a giant car payment.

Actually, if you look around, a twin cam is pretty easy to find if you look hard. Mine was 1500, ran great, and the HUD didn't work. (a common problem) So I took it to Satan, and got that fixed. It ran until last month, when my exhaust cam broke due to the upper timing chain tensioner putting undue pressure on the cam. (I missed the TSB that said to remove it)
But I digress. The point is that the KA24 is pratically indestructable. I wouldn't (and didn't) blink an eye at buying a 240 with 150 thousand miles, and expecting it to run for the next 50,000 miles.
And even a single cam isn't unbearable. Frankly, the front bumper is the worst part of those cars.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the statement above (yes 've heard it a billion times before) does not hold true for a Civic. My car cost 4k, it is dirt cheap to maintain and keep full of gas, it never breaks, and on the twisty track it keeps up with some pretty quick cars.

Mike, I'm going to go out on a limb and say:
There are no cool engine swaps available for a civic.
I'm sorry but b16, b18, k20, and h22 variants are not cool compared to any version of the SR20DE-T, an rb20, 25 or 26, or as Dave will tell you a 2jz.
Which is a good idea Dave. Put yourself into debt by doin ga 2jz swap in the 240sx you will soon buy.
Don't be mad at me when it is stolen 3 week later.

Cars can be fun without boost. I guarantee a B18C hatch or a k20 would knock your socks off - think low 13s stock for the b18C and high 12s for a k20... All with stock Honda reliability! Oh yeah, and they turn like mofo's too!

"cool" is a matter of opinion anyway.
Personally I am no fan of FWD, but the thought of a lightweight EK hatch with a K20 makes me salivate.....
cool=b00st
to tell you the truth i have never been in a car that i felt VTEC kick in.........ive driven about 5 d16z6 civics and didnt feel any difference anywhere from 4500-6500. That being said can someone with a real VTEC car gimme a ride sometime (RJ?) cause i gotta feel the VTEC cause im pretty sure all those cars vtec controller was unplugged or not working right. Unless its THAT subtle, but there was no noise of the cams switching to the VTEC lobes or anything and it didnt wanna pull past 6500 very hard
