I'm still not clear on what happens here. My car is equipped with what the factory called a "heal-toe acceleration pedal.ÔÇØ ItÔÇÖs freakinÔÇÖ HUGE, like 3in wide. ItÔÇÖs really close to the brake because it is so big, I guess that is to make the maneuver easier. I think my lack of understanding is more profound seeing as I donÔÇÖt know anything about the ÔÇ£proper way to take a corner.ÔÇØ The point of this is to keep the RPMÔÇÖs up though the turn and then come back into the powaa in a lower gear smoothly, right? The advantage to this is???? I know it should be obvious but I havenÔÇÖt even been on a level 1 HPDE yet. I donÔÇÖt know a single thing about track driving and the science and terms that do with it.

you won't learn heal-toe in HPDE 1, it's considered a more advanced technique.

Try heel-toeing. While your braking you rev match to avoid losing the revs. You want to keep the power available out of a turn and going into a turn you're braking...so you'll want to blip the throttle WHILE you're braking to keep the power there when you down shift. You've heard of rev-matching right? Try doing that. Once you get a feel of how much throttle to give it when switching from gear-to-gear then try using the heel-toe technique. I learned this way on the road and then i applied it to my first track weekend and it came naturally....but having that wide gas pedal is essential IMO, it's difficult with a skinnier one.

Thanks Jay and RJ, I've never heard of rev matching before this thread but that refers to matching the engine RPM to the ideal for the gear you are shifting to, to maintain the current speed without any jerking or the engine holding you back.

right, when you're cornering at the limit or doing anything at the limit you want to be as smooth as possible. heel-toeing is basically rev matching with your foot also applying a constant pressure to the brake.

I'm learning heel toe as well, and it's hard as crap for me unless I'm wearing thin shoes or just socks. But once you get the hang of it, taking a corner is so much more fun.

yeah i found that out too, the right shoes will do it and "heel-toe" is more likely done with rolling the ankle onto the gas for people who don't have a whole lot of room to move the entire foot (ie: what i do most of the time)

the diesel wish's actually is a good shoe for me to do it in (flat, i can feel the pedals well, and their not ankle restrictive) I need a stiffer sole than just socks, i'm thinking of getting a pair of low-cut wrestling shoes

You dont want a stiffer sole - less 'feel'

for me, heel and toeing gets easier the harder i press the brake. so, if you are starting out, it will feel more difficult and jerky at more street-like brake pressures. under hard, prolonged braking i feel like i have more control.

Just something I wanted to point out, you will NEVER 'rev match'. What you will want to do thought is just stab the gas and let out of the clutch AS the revs drop, with the clutch engaging BEFORE the engine RPMs are below transmission-in-gear speed. This way it sort of all 'falls into place'. A true engine match will only be obtained in an SMG sort of gear box.

That's how it appears to YOU. I just don't want him to get to caught up in trying to get the RPM's EXACT and looking at the tach when he should be looking at the turn in (or better yet, turn out). I was once to caught up in trying to get it _exact_ and that kept screwing me up. The more I played iwth it and talked to people the basic idea of stab the gas, make a bunch of noise and let out clutch before revs drops made things much easier.

Dip clutch, blippity the happy pedal, shift and engage clutch - there's no reason you cant get the revs up exactly right. Every once in a while I do, but its not the norm by far.

exactly, so why bother getting hung up on trying to get it _exact_. I was just pointing that out b/c that's what threw me off for a while.
