The owners of some of our subcontracted companies don't have formal educations and they're making WAY more than both of my parents combined, who both graduated from Duke, then UNC grad school. Correct, we don't actually "construct" the homes, the people we hire do. In fact, the framing of the house actually comes from our plant pre-manufactured; they just have to be attached together. This job isn't about manual labor if you're doing it right, although yeah, you have to carry stuff around sometimes if it needs to be done. You should never have to do anything that you pay someone else to do though....

Mostly it's about planning, attention to detail, and the ability to solve complex problems. The knowledge base you need to have about the product you build and the building process in general is huge. Right now I'm supervising 13 townhouses in different phases of construction. If you had any idea of how many things can go wrong when building a house, you'd understand how incredibly hard this is heh. AND I still suck at it, and probably will for a while. Usually it takes about 3 years to get good at this job. Although the walkthroughs I've had on the 3 houses that have almost settled have been very good, with the customers finding very minor issues before settlement 8)

I'm not trying to say that a computer geek's job is not difficult, almost any job is hard / stressful in some way. What I'm saying is that if you took a picture of a computer person doing actual work at 3 random times of the day and took a picture of me at 3 different times, it's pretty much guaranteed that you couldn't tell the 3 pics of the geek apart and it's pretty much guaranteed that I would be in 3 different places doing 400 different things.

Both of you have valid points. To be fair, Im sure there are so many things about IT work that you dont understand, and never will. He'll, I know for sure I will always suck at life when it comes to computers. Hence the reason we major in different things, and end up working at different places. I just have to reply to this because I thought RJ made a valid point. My dad is a construction worker, has been for as long as I can remember. He is a project supervisor for his company. Now my dad is your typical construction worker at times, kinda dense. But the shit he knows they can't teach you in college. He can look at a space formed up or not, and tell you about how many yards of concrete you'll need. I can't tell you how many feet are in a yard. He can do fractions in his head like nobody's business. I hate fractions. And I have to tell you, I might be college educated and more eloquent than my dad, and even a little more cultured, but my dad never ceases to amaze me with his knowledge and intelligence.

That's because 99% of the problems are behind the walls and are unseen to customers. The "new home" industry is a racquet in this area, with pretty much every home constructed with substandard materials and by workers who really don't give a damn about the quality of their product.

As far as most builders go, you're right. NV is a little different. Every house will have problems because it's a human that built it. There is no perfect house. I can tell you the majority of our problems are cosmetic issues, but stuff always arises over time as a house settles and water seeps down into places it shouldn't go, etc. I can tell you that buying an older home is not going to give you less problems heh. Our service department is what sets us apart from other builders... it's excellent ! We take care of our customers because we want them to be happy and we want them to be return buyers !

i worked in "construction" after college for a while to learn things... welding and fabrication mostly. the two guys i worked with, in conversation at the bar... you would sware they were two neck with now high school education... guess what, you would be right... but they built things better than anyone we hired... who went to trade schools or were union trained... two guys that never finished high school were dealing with physics and geometry all day...
