like others have said about the pads you had trouble with, I tracked the hell out of HP+ in my E36 with no brake cooling and no problems. Same with my E30. And it's got worthless drum rears too.

As far as the question at hand though, just throw some grabby pads on that truck and maybe rebuild the calipers, that will be plenty for an autocross. And you have discs front and drums rear now? Get the drums working properly too (it might require replacing just about everything inside the dum) and you might be surprised how much brake you get back. I'm not sure how your system works, but in mine, if the drums are out of adjustment, it makes the pedal very mushy and takes away from the response of the whole system.

aaaah. i misunderstood what you meant by engine braking. i guess i was thinking about compression braking? but yeah, using your definition of engine braking, i try not to engine brake. forcing your friction disk to take the engine from idle (or near it) to whatever rpm is akin to a hard launch in my mind.

Thats not engine braking, thats improper downshifting.
